Water break

I sneezed yesterday and noticed i got a bit wet down there. Went to the toilet and i dont think it was wee. Im worried maybe my water broke but no contractions have started. This was 9pm last night. Do contractions start after water breaks? What should i do? Ive heard about 24hours water breaks. Any advice?

Have a wee, then put on a pad and lie down for five minutes. If there’s a gush of fluid when you stand up it’s likely to be your waters as they pool in your vagina, like when you stand up on a heavy period it’s the same kind of thing! Contractions don’t always follow waters breaking, there could be a delay or it might have only been a partial water break. The best thing to do is phone triage to go and get checked as they can take a swab and confirm if the waters have broken/labour has started xx

Personally I would go in and get checked. They can do a swab to check if it was waters. Your risk of infection goes up after 24 hours and if it was your waters they’d need to get a plan in place for you depending on how far along you were x

I wouldn't get checked yet. Agree with Katie, put a pad on and see if anything else comes out. Waters have a specific smell, it kind of smells like semen. You'll be able to distinguish this from discharge or wee. If you do leak anymore keep the pad and the hospital can confirm. If it is your waters, do what you can to relax 🥰 let the oxytocin flow. My waters went early with my first and I was classed as PPROM (went at 36+1). I am convinced I was getting cramps and early contractions but I stressed myself out worrying and ended up not going naturally and needed induction at 36+6. The amount of time you'll be left depends on the hospital. Some hospitals are 24 hours, this is unnecessary imo if signs of infection are monitored and all going well. Some are 48 hours if full term. Others are happy to leave and monitor. If you're worried perhaps look up PROM/PPROM depending on what your gestation is and look at the various risk factors so you can be informed 🥰

My last pregnancy I was napping and then had wet in my pj trousers, didn’t think anything of it and went to bed! Went to the hospital the next day as thought I should get checked and it was them. My contractions didn’t start for like another 15 hours! I’d keep an eye on it with a pad and maybe call triage for advice x

I saw somewhere saying put a pad in, lie for like 10/15 minutes, get up and see if anything comes out!

My waters had broke the first time. I put a pad and very little would trickle every few hours. I dint think anything of it. It had no odour either. I finally decided to get it checked and it was definitely my waters. So please go check it out if you have any doubts. Contractions dont necessarily start right away. I dint have any even after 24hours.

Update - it was very little water leakage so at the hospital for induction since its been 24hrs. For anyone going through the same thing - please go for checks. Fingers crossed 🤞
