Finger foods

Just a bit of advice/guidance please. My 6 month old has porridge for breakfast and has pureed food for dinner. He loves his food and I have no worries. Is he too young to start finger foods, and if not, what can I give him? I am absolutely terrified of him choking and planning to book a baby first aid course purely because of this fear. He doesn't have any teeth yet.

My little girl doesn't have teeth yet. She enjoys sucking on cucumber sticks, crumpets, avocado & banana muffins. If you download the 'solid starts' app it helps you to prepare foods safely for the child's age x

I’ve been giving my LO something she can hold herself like steamed green beans, cooked apples, bananas, bread etc. they say you can give them anything that passes the squish test. If you can squish with your fingers easily then they can mush with their gums

Thanks ladies. I think i might try with banana and go from there lol

Baby's don't need teeth to start finger foods or solids, as baby's jaw is so strong. The main thing with finger foods is what I call the squidge test where you easily squidge food between your thumb and index finger, eg apple ...no , banana yes. If you wanted to give apple you would need to poach them. You can roast many veg like sweet potatoes, carrots, courgettes. Don't be afraid to season with spices . I've given my little one porridge balls, slow cooked lamb that's shredded. bread can be stodgy, but lightly toasting it and spreading something on it like a nut butter will help it go down. The list is endless. I did a solids class by my little eater which was great. Also teaches safety, nutrition and all sorts.

My LO loves roasted sweet potato wedges with the skin on. The skin makes it easier to grip, and the flesh is very soft. I always keep an eye on him and if he ends up with just skin in his hand, I remove it.

Also scrambled eggs have been a winner too with a bit of grated cheese on top sometimes

Check out Solid Starts - they have an Instagram and an app, you can use the app to look up specific foods abs they tell you how to prepare it! Pretty much anything can work, it’s just a matter of preparation ☺️

We skipped purees and went straight to blw. Steamed carrot, broccoli, etc. Avocado and fruit sliced with a crinkle cutter. Yogurt, tofu, pancakes and toast sliced into fingers. As others said, we are using the solid starts app.

Well i gave him blended roast dinner tonight (with little lumps in) i don't think he's ready for that texture yet. He gagged a bit but I didn't intervene. He didn't eat much so I gave him some baby food so he was full. Will keep trying

@Elise that's a great start and remember it's normal for baby to gag and spit out at first whilst they are learning. They still get all their nutrition from milk at this stage, so it doesn't matter how much solid they eat.
