At the end of the day, it depends on how you want to celebrate and what's your style! Many parents go overboard and put on such nice productions and sometimes invite a lot of family and friends too. We had a small family gathering and had my son's favorite foods, musical instruments balloons and all the fun stuff he enjoyed and we played and sang with him (as opposed to entertaining guests). We also did a mini cake smash at the end :)
