Starting solids

My son is almost 11 month olds. We have been doing purées since about 6 months and I am trying to start solids/ finger foods. He gags on almost everything (I know gagging is normal but it is after every bite). I am starting to wonder if he has some kind of trouble with eating solid foods and he needs to see a feeding specialist/ SLP. Any recommendations??

Hi Kayla I’m going through something similar. She doesn’t gag after every bite but getting her to eat things aside from purée or very soft foods has been difficult and I’m worried as well

My baby is also about to be 11 months

Maybe she has a preference for the purées? His dr said some babies stay on soft foods till up to a year so it’s not a concern if they don’t eat solid food before that. But I am concerned for him choking because he likes the solid foods but can’t really eat them.

You can have it evaluated bc it can be sensory or it can be a motor delay. For my son it was a motor delay. He is now fine (he’s 2 now). We got help through the Regional Center. We started feeding therapy with softer foods and worked our way up in textures.

It takes time, I had my son on milk and purées only until 13 months, I would try to give him solids but he just wouldn’t want any he would gag often once we got him off formula he started eating more solids he is definitely picky with what he wants but he eats solids very well now!
