Preschool autism query

My son was born in September 2021 and has always been what I have described as ‘analytical’. At baby group etc he always sits and watches rather than getting properly involved. He observes and then might decide to get involved later. He is very quietly spoken when around others, but around us is very loud. He doesn’t listen very well unless it’s to do with chocolate and fireman Sam. He started at a new preschool in September 2024 for 2 days a week. They have mentioned that they don’t think he has good core strength and have flagged that he walks very slowly, is very quietly spoken and doesn’t get involved much. I haven’t seen these things as an issue but they’ve said this morning they want to refer us to early years support at the council for an autism assessment. They’ve acknowledged he has no developmental delays and his speech is very good. I am so anxious - I don’t want him to struggle because I love him so much. I want to understand if these sound like autistic traits, as I’ve never thought they were. I’ve assumed this was just him - quiet and observant. He’s so bright and articulate, has a brilliant vocabulary, loves to read books, play in the garden and watch tv. He will chat away to us and people he is comfortable with. I’m so worried xx

The thing is - autism is a spectrum. Everyone presents a little bit differently. Being quiet and observant in new situations is not, by itself, indicative of autism but when you add in other factors it can be. Autistic people are often very bright and can even be hyperlexic. The national autistic society has a good website with a lot of information you might find helpful, but the main thing is whether he’s autistic or not he is still the same person. Autism is just a slightly different way of seeing the world.

Hi, My three years old nursery and my self think he could be autistic. He is quiet at nursery, often sola plays or play vire parrell play next to another child instead of with. He wants to do pretty much his own thing. He often doesn't listen to his name being shouted and will not sit still in group time/quiet time, I am told. He will often cry when asked to do something and cry if a child is the same toy as him. He also has a delayed speech and uses repeat words/ questions and says the same words not correctly every time in the same way. But as the lady says, different children autism effect different doesn't make ur child any different to others. just means they see thing different to other. And any help is a good thing. My nursery can't ref my son I'm doing a course and waiting for health visitors

Thank you both, I’ll have a look at the national autistic society website, I really appreciate your help. Thank you. Xxx

These wouldn't have jumped out to me as signs of autism personally. It sounds like your little boy is developing wonderfully, so I would maybe question the nursery about what the benefit of an assessment would be. What areas exactly do they think he needs more support in and how would having an assessment help them be able to provide that? Either way the assessment won't do any harm and might put your mind at ease.
