Baby wont feed formula

Ladies, looking to see if anyone can relate or going/gone through the same. My LO - 5 days old, has jaundice, been put on a feeding plan, part breast milk with a top up of formula (50ml). We are persevering with breast feeding but not sure how much he’s getting as that is a struggle. But at least we know he’s getting 50ml formula every 3 hours. Now, the boy is falling asleep on the bottle teat, or if he drinks, he’s not really swallowing and spitting it all out. We’ve been told that each feed should last 30 minutes, however it’s going on for more than an hour for us. Latest feed was 2 hours- this was 50ml of formula. Of course this is not ideal, how can I get him to drink quicker or to like formula. I can’t be that mum who can’t breastfeed and formula feed! 😭

What’s his latch like? Has he been checked for tongue tie? X

My LO couldn’t latch so I dropped breast feeding for 70ml newborn bottles (U.K. cow and gate). Breastfeeding was too stressful for me, him and hard after c-section. How is babies birthweight? If small, may take him a while to be better on the teet, particularly if jaundiced. You can try different bottles or teets. If I remember, 50-60ml feeding was what my boy did in early days maybe every two/three hours though he was ravenous and fed fast. I didn’t give up on breastfeeding but it wasn’t going well - latch. But, I bought plastic nipple shields and he latched perfectly! I was shocked! So, I generally express and top up formula and am building in more breast time but he’s done so well on formula - sleeps great and is getting nice and fat. Experiment & Spk to your health visitor. Gd luck!

I would say maybe he’s full ? I find that when my daughter was full she’ll just fall asleep while eating or push her tongue out

Baby is 6 days old. 3.3kg. We are at the hospital so get given the NHS newborn teats. Not full as he hasn’t eaten anything yet. But just wont go on the bottle at all.

Things that come to mind are.. tongue ties ofcourse. But try cup feeding? Should be much easier than bottle feeding. Let the formula spill out while cup feeding as long as he's getting some. Watch a youtube video for tutorial.

Maybe he doesn’t like the type of formula he’s getting. Try a different brand. And I agree with what a few women have said. Check for tongue tie.
