I wouldn't opt out since you don't know what your circumstances will be and since it says that you'd have to pay some of it back, not all. Surely it would be better to have it in the event that you do want to stay there, or so that you can keep some of it if you do decide to leave?
I opted out of the enhanced mat pay with in my first pregnancy because I had the same type of clause.
I’m able to opt out at work and then if you return for the allotted time they’ll pay you the enhanced payment that you would have been entitled to all in one go - so definitely worth asking about!
I wasn't sure about going back but I did for 3 months after maternity as per policy to pay back what I would have owed then I left permanently
I’d just put the extra money into an account if you don’t need it and don’t want to return- that way you can make the choice when the time comes

you would have to check with your employer tbh! this is the same situation with me at my work place and they told me I couldn’t opt out - but they cannot expect the amount back in one go I’m sure.. they would more likely do payment plan if it doesn’t not seem reasonable x
