When to give sugar+salt?

Online, it says to avoid added salt until 12mos and added sugar until 24mos, but I wanted to ask here what you guys have done with your kids and what you think works best 😊

My son will be 1 in a few days. I haven't given sugar at all, except in a piece of Oreo he found 😆 His smash cake has sugar in the frosting because I don't want to make my own, but the cake has maple syrup. I use maple syrup and honey to sweeten most things, even for myself, so I don't plan on changing that soon. Same with salt. I salt our meals after cooking so his doesn't have any.

@Kenedi careful with honey girl! They shouldn’t have it until after one or later because they’re at risk for paralysis/death if it carries a certain bacteria.

@Tiff thanks! I was having a mom brain moment and wasn't clear. I use both for me and just syrup for him for now.

@Kenedi I totally understand and have absolutely done this!! I didn’t even know the honey thing until my first child was licking it off a spoon when sick at 8 months and my fellow Mom friend freaked out and showed me the info! Haha

My LO is 2 years 7 months and he has never had sugar, I’ve honestly found it pretty easy to avoid. It’s when he gets older that it will get harder. I do spend a small fortune on fresh fruit weekly though 🤣 He doesn’t know any different so he’s not missing out on anything and sugar literally meets every classification for a drug and destroys the immune system. Obviously I can’t control him his whole life, but I don’t see the benefit in giving it to him when he is so little. He gets his sweetness from fruit and he absolutely adores it. I don’t go out of my way to add salt to his food, but he eats what we eat for his meals but I do all my own cooking so I’m aware of how much is going in. We also strictly only use Celtic salt. I did avoid salt until 12 months and then just let him eat what we have after that. As above, if I needed to sweeten something for cooking I would be using honey (after 12+ months), pure maple syrup or coconut sugar 😊

@Michele nobody warns us about the fruit budget 😂😂 !!! I Literally started a berry garden because my heart hurts everytime I spend $20 on 3 tiny packs of organic berries and they’re gone by the time I finish unloading the groceries haha.
