You are not supposed to. According to the cdc.

CDC is nasty, you can wash your chicken in a bowl of water and vinegar or lemon before cooking. Do you realise it’s been touched and cut up before getting to you.

@Ema but the heat kills the germs does it not?

Guess I’m nasty then.. Any potential bacteria on my chicken would get taken care of when it’s cooked. But the potential for cross contamination from raw chicken water splashing anywhere in my sink or worktops etc. poses a bigger risk to me than the gloved hands that handled my raw chicken. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Ema science does not care what you think is gross. It is much more gross to wash it and spread all those germs. Cook it to the correct temperature and it is fine

@Haley CDC is not very trustworthy at all…the system was designed to keep us sick with all of these toxic food additives and toxins in our body products, heavy metals…canola oil used to be a machine lubricant and they sell it to us to cook with in our food…I find that when I wash my chicken in lemon/lime juice and water then I season it , it can last 2-3 days in my fridge which slightly turned up to be a little colder than on the recommended setting also…if you wash your fruits like berries in water in lime juice they last longer, btw they put canola, vegetable safflower oil in everything…that is why I only buy tortilla chips made with avocado oil

And make sure you don’t eat out anywhere in the UK, where kitchens will strictly abide by health and safety for food handling, which will include not washing their chicken.

@lauren🧚‍♀️ I guess there is no need to wash your rice or your vegetables or literally anything before cooking it then. Let’s all just be nasty.

@Chloe do you not clean your sink and countertops regularly?

I’d say *you* were the nasty one for washing it 🤢🤮 But then our food safety standards are waaay higher in the UK

If your concern is germs splashing then you need to be more worried about disinfecting your kitchen. As you should be doing so anyway before and after every meal prep.

@Yasmina I appreciate your thoughts but the constant thinking that scientists and doctors are lying (and instead trust random other people on social media) and against people is very anti science and it causes things like the current political situation in the USA to happen.

It’s a cultural practice, that is based on tradition, NOT any science. Trust me, if you eat chicken out anywhere they are not washing it.

@Ema well, if you’re cooking it then i don’t see the need to wash it😂 the heat kills any germs on the food/vegetables. if you’re eating them raw then obviously wash them???

A lot of things that seem or feel “gross” are actually fine. Practices like washing raw meat, using strong chemicals on a frequent basis, douching, cleaning ears with Q tips, exfoliating too often, etc might seem more hygienic at surface level, but studies show they actually increase risk of infection

@Lisa I am sure, they are not. The same way I am sure all their staffs do not keep to hand washing and health and safety like they are suppose to. Does not make either one right.

@lauren🧚‍♀️ why do you wash the other foods before cooking them then?

@Ema Of course… but it’s very naive to think that you’re clearing up every single water droplet that may be responsible for cross contamination by simply disinfecting your work surfaces and sink… And the advice from the food standards agency is there for a reason. To advise people to go against it because you think it’s nasty is wild 😅 You do you, your kitchen, your food, whatever. Just personally don’t get the need to call others out for literally doing the safest thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Rebecca are you trying to say it is better to clean your bum with just tissue paper rather than actually washing it? 🤢

@Chloe firstly, just because they say it is safe does not mean it is safest. Asif organisations haven’t gotten it wrong before. And seeing as you trust them so much then you should believe that a standard kitchen bleach disinfectant should do it’s job. How do you miss a splash?we aren’t children. Anyway, yes you do you.

@Ema i don’t.. because cooking kills the germs like i just said. if you’re eating them raw, then wash them

But how bout minced meat? Or mince chicken? Does anyone wash that?

I feel like you risk salmonella washing it lol

I don’t even like touching it lmao

@Celestial you should google how people get Salmonella.

@Yasmina 🙄 Canola oil used to be a machine lubricant because natural plant oils..make good lubricant.

@lauren🧚‍♀️ so you don’t wash a single item you cook with? Not even your rice, raw vegetables?

@Trish highly refined and processed though…natural plant oils that are cold pressed are good for your body…canola/vegetable oil is highly inflammatory

There is literally article after article talking about why people wash their meat and the history of it but people never read them when I post it. So I'll share this tiktok that reminds me of this subject matter. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMkVU6r2x/ Video on what washing meat actually looks like https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMkVULK2Y/

@Zainab🗝️ honestly, don’t even get me started on people not bathing their kids regularly! But the boldness of people typing how they don’t wash anything they cook and then they say they worried about germs. 🤣

@Ema I approve this message!!!!

@Ema I posted a picture of me washing lamb and a few people realized what they thought was washing meat is not anything like what it actually is.

@Zainab🗝️ yes, I think some believe we are like children doing a science experiment and splashing meat water all over the place. Except it is lots of meat, I don’t even splash but i disinfect afterwards anyway.

Washing it spreads germs around your kitchen from the micro droplets or water that have touched the raw chicken. And water alone is not going to kill germs on a piece of raw meat so it's pointless. The heat kills the germs as it cooks.

@Ema yep that's what's said every single time this comes up. If I've learned anything from the internet and people who enter other people's homes for a living, there are a lot of filthy kitchens out there who haven't seen some bleach even once.

I've worked in a chicken factory and the chicken are washed before and after production. From washing it there is an illness called chicken revenge which you get from the bacteria from the chicken being spread by washing. Honestly people have been off work for weeks with it. The heat from chicken being cooked will kill any bacteria. the bacteria will also spread a lot further than you think washing at home

Just curious, if you accept that washing meat isn’t to actually clean it and it’s more for cultural reasons and taste, then why is it ‘nasty’ to not do it?

@Georgina nobody said wash with water alone🤔and you disinfect and clean your kitchen afterwards.

Like gotdamn clockwork 😂😂😂 but #teamwashthatchicken

This is why I don’t eat food from other peoples houses. If you wash your meat please keep your food away from me.

I always wash meat before cooking it, can literally taste the difference.

@Ema what do you wash it with? Soap?

@Kath oh hun, this is sad for the people working there. My generation and generations before me going all way back to Christ have been washing their chicken before cooking and God willing, never go it. If washing chicken wasn’t important then why do they do it in the factory?

And I disinfect my kitchen when I've had any raw meat on my kitchen surfaces anyway.

@Ema these posts always get a lot of comments and often there will be subtle forms of racial discrimination (or like outright prejudice) so it's a good litmus test for if you really want to engage with certain people or not.

@Georgina you cannot be this ignorant. White vinegar, lemon.

@SquishyMommy1 I feel the same way.

@Ema That's really rude. Washing chicken is not a regular custom in the UK so this isn't something I've been used to doing. Anyhow, even whe washed either that, a raw chicken would still be crawling with bacteria. I'm not arguing with a random over a flipping chicken, have a good day.

@Ema I didn’t specify the butt, however I’d recommend cleaning the bottom with a gentle fragrance free soap. For the vulva, I’d recommend cleaning with water only, and only for the external genitalia - the vaginal canal is self cleaning!

What does washing chicken do to it though? Like does it taste better?
