Nurseries

My boys will be 2 in June so I want to put them in nursery in September and I’ve been looking round at some. I visited a nursery today and I’ll only be applying for 15 free hours (as realistically I’m not working yet and can’t work until I can figure out their days and hours) but the nursery said it’s non negotiable if I want them on the waiting list it’s a £50 deposit per child. Is this normal or? I didn’t have £100 to just give right now as I’m not even sure I liked the nursery that much but will every nursery do this as I understand private nurseries are in high demand and don’t want to waste anyone’s time if I have to put a deposit down for every nursery if I like it

Yes, it's standard to have to put down a deposit. I can't remember what we paid but I think it was more than £50 so that's actually pretty reasonable (at my little boy's nursery that's only half a day's fees!)

Yes that’s normal. For our nursery it’s £85 deposit per child

@Sophie honestly i don’t think the price caught me off guard as much but because I have twins I didn’t have money to just hand over rn but that’s nice to know as I’ll make sure it’s a nursery I’m dead set on xx

We paid a deposit of £20 and were actually moving next week so we’ve had to take her off the waiting list. Can’t believe how expensive they can be!

@Liv yeah especially as it wouldn’t be until September either 😅

We’ve put our name down for a Sept 2026 preschool already! But yup deposits are standard. You could try a childminder?

Try a preschool, I didn’t put a deposit down for my boys preschool. Also, if you pay the deposit would you then get it taken off your first invoice? Or is it just £50 per child on top of that invoice?

Very normal. I paid £550 deposits for a private nursery! Then £50 for pre/school.

Our little boy attends private nursery and we didn't have to put a deposit down so they do exist but it's also normal to have to
