Kindergarten in Ontario

Hi, wondering what kids learn in kindergarten? I am thinking of skipping it. Has anyone here kept their kids out of school until grade 1?

I used to go to school for ECE, including in a kindergarten classroom for one placement. Kids actually learn a lot in kindergarten. There are actual lessons and lesson plans (that repeat every 2 years, so they do half in Jk and half in sk) that teach everything from writing to basic math to science. Plus, kids, especially those who didn't go to any daycare or anything like that, learn how to socialize and get along with others. Kids also have music and gym class in kindergarten, plus some school boards have other classes; the school I was in, once a week there was a teacher who came to the class and taught the kids mindfulness skills: identifying their feelings, helping calm/center themselves so they don't do something inappropriate like hitting someone. While I was in the kindergarten room, there were some kids who left for months to go to other countries with parents. When they came back, they were so far behind, enough that if we still failed kids in elementary school, they would have had to repeat jk/sk

We were doing projects on dinosaurs and animals in kindergarten. Insect life cycles, class pets. Along with reading, writing, patterns, math, art. Not to mention all the social learning they do

Ellie and Kai have mentioned the educational and social side of it. I would also ask you to consider how you will fill your child's day if they are not in school/age appropriate daycare. Most kids around 4 drop their naps so if they are still in a small daycare the Littles will nap and the 4 yr Olds will have quite time. If you're keeping the child at home you need to have meaningful activities planned for everyday like in school. It's okay for kids to get bored but there's only so much they will learn from their toys or have a significant part of their day spent in front of a screen.
