Bunk bed dilemma

Help need some advice. I dont want my children sleeping in a bunk bed at their nans house. One child is 2 years and the other is 6 years. Im anxious that the 2 year old will jump off. Sorry should of specified that my 2year old copys everything his brother does. So if my eldest is on top i know he will climb up there too. Am i over reacting to reject and say no i feel uncomfortable with them sleeping in one or do i go along as its my partner family as i dont want to offend them, they are planning to buy one without even consulting me if its okay?

If they really want to get them a bunk bed it should be fine, just make sure you establish those boundaries with your boys. Absolutely no judgement, I just think that your boys are definitely old enough to listen and follow directions knowing there are consequences for their actions. It’s a learning/ parenting opportunity!!

Can the 6year old not go on the top bunk and the 2 year old not sleep on the bottom one? To save him hurting himself if he rolls off? And he can’t jump off either then? Im not a lover of my in laws so im thinking if it was me in the situation. And if I’m honest I would say, they’ve probably not consulted you because they don’t feel it’s an issue. It’s nice of them to consider each of them to have their own bed and they’re willing to do that. And to have that space for them in their home. Plus they’re also having your children for you so I suppose you’ve got to look at it like that. I wouldn’t be offended by them not consulting you on bunk beds. I personally don’t think it’s an issue. If you’re struggling to accept it maybe speak to your partner and see what his thoughts are? Xx

I bought my older children bunk beds when they were 2 and 4.. indeed the 2 year old climbed up and took a head dive off.. busted out teeth, hospital stay, lower lip sewn back together.. both of them knew the little one wasn't allowed up there, generally I always was in sight if they were in their room but you can't watch 100%of the time and kids will be kids and misbehave. Personally I would be saying something; like "that's really sweet of you and I would love that in a couple of years but littlest is just not safe in that sort of situation yet.."

Thank you for your comments, i will speak with my partner about my concerns and hope he can persuade his family with a pull out single bed instead as i do feel the younger one wont follow suit he is jumping off sofas and doing all sorts when ive told him several times not too toddlers. Its good to get some feedback

I think eventually it'll be fine but 2 is probably a little young to understand the dangers and they're obviously not attended to throughout the night so for me it'd be a no. UK safety guidelines are that no kids under 6 should use the top bunk so I'd point them to that advice. As your 2 year old (like most!) can't be trusted yet not to go up there I'd say that's why you're not comfortable with them sleeping in a bunk bed yet. They'd probably be fine from 3-4 once the understand to stay on the bottom one so I'm not saying you need to wait until your youngest is 6.

@Caroline Thank you very informative

You could suggest a trundle bed? That’s a single bed with a large ‘draw’ underneath that you can either use as a draw or put a mattress in. We’ve got one and it’s great!
