Insurance covering hospital birth

I’m trying to see if my insurance is good or not. I had my baby in September 2024 and I owe over 5k from birthing my baby. I looked into it and my insurance only covers 85%. Is this normal?

My bill was 35k. I had to pay $250 after insurance.

You could call and ask them to give you an itemized bill instead, if you’re in the US they legally have to, many times it will be less, then you can try to negotiate the price down even further if you want

@Diandra ignore this scammer

Mine was 3k for 7 days and csection and then another 3k for 5 days in the NICU

What type of birth did you have? My induction I ended up paying almost $2000 more than my spontaneous birth. I met my out of pocket max so it could have been much more but I didn’t look too in depth. Birth had a cap of $3000 but anything after my deductible was 90% so yours seems pretty standard

As someone from the UK, I’m so sorry you have to literally pay to bring life into the world. Seems absolutely bonkers to us. Hope you manage to reduce the bill down

It all depends on what is in your insurance contract. It will be different for every single person. Some people have high deductibles and some have low. Some insurance companies will only cover a certain percentage of birth and others more. Ask for an itemized list from the hospital and an itemized list of coverage from your insurance company. You can compare the two and make sure they where correctly billed and paid for everything that they are supposed to cover in your contract.

Totally depends on your insurance. With my first, I was teaching so I had great insurance. We paid like 1000 total and I had a c section under general anesthesia and was in the hospital for 3 days. Quit my job and my husbands insurance is not as good. We will be paying off my 2nds for a while. Total about 6000 after insurance

@Tessa I had a vaginal birth and I was induced. I didn’t meet my out of pocket max

@Autumn thank you for the advice. I’m going to request an itemized bill. They sent me an invoice that’s not as detailed as I would like for it to be

@Meghan nice!

@Cesca sounds like I need to leave the US!! 😩

It could be normal. It sounds like you had a plan with coinsurance for the hospital stay.

Everyone’s insurance is different. For me, I had to meet my deductible of $4,500 before they covered 80% of all my bills. Then once I reached $6,750 total out of pocket, they covered 100% of my medical bills. I was in an out of the hospital due to my pregnancy, so my labor and delivery was fully covered. But I did end up spending a total of $6,750 in medical expenses not related to the labor and delivery.

Can’t believe you have to pay for health care I’m in awe in the uk we get taxed but don’t need to think about paying health care

@Yaz I used to do payroll for a company that had employees in Ireland and omg, I was so jealous when I saw that they didn’t have to pay for healthcare benefits.

Genuine question - do you think charging for child birth curbs the birth rate? We could do with this in the uk!!!!

@Francesca no it doesn’t. We just filed bankruptcy for our medical debt 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Cesca I can’t imagine being billed like that either but many people in America don’t support national healthcare. I’m unsure why.

@Francesca come to Scotland 😂. High taxes for working families probably curbs birth rate lol

@SquishyMommy1 god that’s awful sorry to hear that :-( so it’s not covered on your medical insurance? How many kids do you have?

@Francesca nope. We didn’t have insurance because we couldn’t afford it.

@Chelsea god don’t get me started!!! Yes we both earn over £100k but with 45% tax and £4200 a month on nursery plus a london mortgage even we have to budget!! Only so much this government can squeeze out of us middle earners!! I would love 3 kids but genuinely can’t afford it. Well not to bring them up how we see fit anyway…..

@Francesca just for funsies. What do you pay in tax (monthly)

@Francesca I feel you! The nursery fees are the reason we only have one and we’re both high earners too. I will be too old to have another to wait on the fees ending for our first 😢. Like you we maybe could have more if we were on an extremely strict budget, but I want to give our child as much as we can x

@SquishyMommy1 in the uk any earnings over £125k per annum is taxed at 45%. And plus other outgoings for example national insurance etc. £50k - £125k is taxed at 40%. So a lot goes out a month!!!!! Yes we have the NHS but a lot of corporate jobs have private healthcare as a benefit Ahh you didn’t have insurance 🤦🏻‍♀️ isn’t this an Americans top priority?!

@Chelsea yes we have made a decision to not have 3 - sad really as a lot of low (or even no!) income families seem to think they can afford to breed like rabbits :-( but everyone has their own priorities and outlooks on life. For us education, holidays and a lovely home for the 2 we have was the driver 🥰

I live in Massachusetts USA and my insurance covered everything for labor and delivery. I feel very blessed

For mine, most of the birth was covered, but the anesthesia was not. I paid it, but as I did, I was like "Tell me to my face it was unnecessary." 😡

@Francesca right. But what is the actual dollar amount is what I’m asking.

@Francesca for example. We pay 3k a month for JUST our insurance premium. That does not include the copays for office visits. Medication copays. And deductibles

@SquishyMommy1 oh wow - how many people does that cover?

@Francesca 7

@SquishyMommy1 7!! That’s a big family!! So my originally question of does it curb birth rates is no as people just don’t get insured as the alternative option. So it’s $5000 per annum each for private medical insurance? Wow. That would again be a reason for us to not have more than 2 kids.

@SquishyMommy1 😩😩 that is outrageous

@Jillian the frustrating thing is in order for us to both work 5 days a week we have to pay £4200 a month for childcare!!

@Francesca unfortunately I think it does for the lower & middle class. I say this because oftentimes a decision on how many kids to have is based on financials. If you are below poverty line you qualify for Medicaid and get free healthcare for childbirth and other benefits. Not ideal but helpful. Just a thought

@Jillian I told my husband we would likely do the same thing if we decide to have another child. No sense of both of us working and paying so much to send our kids to daycare with strangers

Yes this is the problem with the UK - those that shouldn’t be having a lot of kids are because they get free assistance! You should be sensible with your family planning not relying on the state

It depends on your deductible and out of pocket costs, etc. That does sound normal to me. You don't have to pay everything at once. Almost all hospitals offer payment plan options.
