Waking for feeds

How long do we have to wake our babies up for feeds at night when can we just start going by their hunger cues?

I was told no longer than 3 hours inbetween feeds until babies back to birth weight. (Breastfed baby)

@Charlotte when do we check if they are back to birth weight as most babies lose weight at the first check in

I wasn’t told but I’ve been following the every 3 hour rule which my baby has seemed to adapted well too. He wakes up bang on every 3 hours for a nappy change and feed!

Are you in uk? We have midwives and health visitors that come out to do health checks and weigh them xx

Silly me - I’ve just posted a question around this, missing this one. We were told by some midwives to wake every 3 hours, and than others have said leave them and they will wake when they are hungry. Currently our baby sleeps between 3-4hrs a sleep, and the midwives are very happy with her weight.

I was told no longer than 4 hours so it differs depending on who you talk to. It’s a difficult one, I’ve just had to wake my baby after a 5 hour stretch but she’s had a shorter gap 2.5 hours between some feeds today so was clearly well fed and content x

I had to every 3 hours then when the health visitor came over at 3 weeks he was back to birth weight and gaining nicely. She said not to bother waking him through the night and just keep the daytime to every 3 hours or on demand (breastfeeding). He still wakes regularly through the night though 🫠

If weight is good then midwives say wake after 4 hours. Mine tends to wake naturally around 3.5 hours.

I was told every 3 hours whilst they’re newborns and so that your milk supply doesn’t dip if you’re breastfeeding
