Let’s discuss contraceptives

I’ve had 2 babies now and want to be on a long term contraceptive as I’m done with children now. Sleep deprivation and raising children is not for me. I’ve suffered with antenatal and have postpartum depression so I just can’t do it. Problem is I can’t take the combined pill due to oestrogen sensitivity, mini pill is difficult to take because you need to take them at the same time everyday for it to be effective. I’m afraid of getting the coil or anything placed inside because of my traumatic delivery and retained placenta from my first pregnancy. Options are either the implant or injection. Any advice??

Have you looked into the patch as well? I'm not sure what hormones it contains.. I've had the implant and didn't get on with it at all! Bled on and off for the year I had it, and it affected my mood a lot! I know you said you don't want the coil, due to your delivery, however, I would say it's been the best contraception for me. Minimal bleeding after and light breakthrough bleeding every 6 months. I found the first time I had it uncomfortable however I've just had another fitted 2 weeks ago at 15wks pp after a traumatic delivery and episiotomy and found it much more comfortable. I'd say if you decide to get one, they will explain everything they are doing, stop when you need them to, and you can ask for numbing gel as well so you can't feel it being inserted.

The mini pill can be taken within 12 hrs each day I believe? So doesn’t have to be exactly the same time. I just set alarms but sometimes take it an hour or two later than the day before and have never had an issue in falling pregnant , do your own research though I’m not an expert. Have a look at the patch if you don’t want coils inserted, depo injection just caused me to gain weight and bleed quite heavily but again everyone different! Good luck!

@Sophie I can’t take the patch because it contains estrogen. I’m allergic to estrogen. Majority people are saying the implant isn’t good and it causes them to bleed throughout. I’ve rarely heard any positive stories regarding it. Is it the hormonal coil you’re on? Or copper IUD? I might give the coil a go then. Just hoping it doesn’t hurt during insertion

@Amara ah okay, it's the hormonal one I have fitted. My gp makes you have an assessment before they fit it so they can assess what you need and which one will suit you. You can ask any questions you have and that's when I asked for the numbing gel as I had it when my last one was fitted at previous gp and found it helped a lot

@Niomi I was on the combined pill rigevidon before (made me get debilitating migraines) so had to stop then I switched to the mini pill (cerelle) and I did remember to take it everyday but most days took them at different times no more than 6 hours late though. I bled throughout the mini pill as well so decided to stop because I was missing my prayers due to it and it was annoying to deal with. However, some people say the bleeding happens because it’s not taken at exactly the same time everyday. Not sure if that’s true or not. It’s so hard being a woman lol 😩

@Sophie I think hormonal coils are progesterone only which is good because I can only take progesterone and it’s more localized in the uterus. It’s good they do this assessment to rule out ones that potentially won’t work or suit someone. Can you ask these questions during your 6 week postpartum mother and baby appointment? Also can you get the coil fitted in this appointment?

@Amara I imagine you could ask at the check and whether they can fit it then will depend on your gp surgery as I know at mine, only certain GPs are trained to do it and they had to order in the coil from the pharmacy as its not something they keep in stock

@Sophie ah thank you! I will ask them. I’m thinking about the hormonal coil (mirena) as well. I think it would suit me as copper coils can cause heavy periods and I’m already anemic and suffer from painful/heavy periods. And will ask them about the numbing gel as well.
