Just jumping on cause I'm also interested in this. The most "normal" food I give my baby is toast. Or like a jacket potato/mash and beans. Other than that he just has chunky purées. But even with toast he constantly bites a huge chunk off and ends up gagging to the point where it basically regurgitates up his throat so I've been too scared to give him other things but I know I need to try soon😬
I'm only feeding my baby. I personally think BLW is pushed so early. I'm just going to see when we both feel ready. I'm still on just breakfast and lunch at the moment but thinking of trying a 3rd meal soon. My baby just has mashed up meals curries, fish ratatouille, salmon pasta, bean chilli, lentil dahl.
BLW baffles me, I've done loads of first aid courses as I used to work in a nursing home but it still scares me. He's on chunky purees and I always give him very small pieces of my food which he enjoys. I just think we will get there naturally and have stopped putting pressure on myself.
We're doing purees atm, she doesn't know what to do with anything chunky yet. So she's on super smoothy purees, looking to up it to thicker purees soon. Tried some of the textured purees and she just spits it out
BLW is scary! Especially if you’re doing it for the first time. My June baby is my second baby so I feel much more confident this time but with my first I was so so nervous at mealtimes, I got no enjoyment from weaning at all particularly as he had a really strong gag reflex but I could also see how beneficial BLW was and fully understood the ‘science’ behind it. Have you tried using Solid Starts app? Or following their Instagram? It shows videos on what foods are best to try and stop baby from taking massive bites from them. Things like toast are easier to gag and choke on as they go soft and doughy in the mouth and confuse the brain. Perhaps start with something really firm and solid for baby to get used to like a stick of cucumber, corn on the cob or a piece of well done meat about two fingers wide so they can grip it in their hands and can gnaw away on it but won’t be able to bite huge chunks.
But remember, although BLW is all the rage now and is what everyone ‘seems to be doing’, you will do what is best for you and your LO. Spoon feeding for a little longer will not change anything except perhaps you’ll have a little less cleaning to do at mealtimes until they start feeding themselves! And you might feel calmer and happier which is what baby needs most. Good Luck!
It is really scary and my little boy takes huge chunks too and has gagged many times but he always manages to spit it out. It's a process they have to go through in order to learn what is appropriate for them. I found watching videos on the difference between gagging and choking gave me more confidence but I do agree it's still a really scary process 🙈
