Saying words with context

Does your baby say words knowing who/what they are referring to? My nearly 9 month old says dadda and baba but I don’t think he has an understanding of what they mean. For example he doesn’t say dadda and look at his dad. Just wondering for those of you that have older children, when did they start to say words and show an understanding of who they are referring to?

My eldest started fully understanding and copying words around 12-18 months My youngest (now 9 months) doesn’t say any words yet and just babbles so don’t worry

Mine will crawl to my mum and say Nana x

My eldest first word was dog and he did it when looking at a picture of a dog and then out and about at dogs. That was at 10 mo

My baby says dada randomly even when he’s not here but when he comes home she’ll shout dada too xx
