i’m under the impression everyone is entitled to the child benefit?
If your household earns a combined wage of above 120k then you wouldn’t be entitled or they’d be a reduction, if you earn less then get your claim in gurl!
There is an 80k cap I believe
Everyone is entitled to child benefit but if one of the household earns over £60k you have to pay a charge on it which makes it not worth claiming
A lot of conflicting info here, but as I understand it: If one of you earns over £60k you pay some of the money back, if one of you earns over £80k you pay all of it back. Combine income doesn’t matter.
Lisa is right if one person earns over £60k then you pay some back in tax Combined income is irrelevant So if you and your partner both individually earn less then £60k a year you can claim it ☺️
My husband earns over £60k so we paid a small % back for the last financial year. I’m at SAHM but I’ll continue to claim it as it helps towards my class 2 national insurance contributions.
Lisa is right, also, if you’re only just over the threshold you could up your pension contributions to make your earnings lower than 60k which i believe makes you legible to receive it
Yes Lisa is right - my partner and I both usually earn over £80k / year but the past year as I was on mat leave and my partner also took a break between jobs we will both earn somewhere around £60k or less for the year. So in our case we are claiming it for now and will likely pay back a small amount as part of self assessment tax return for the amount we've earned over the £60k threshold if needed.
Roughly how much did you have to pay back @Francesca ? If you don’t mind answering
@Shanika I was to say around £700. You can either pay it back as a lump sum or change your tax code. It won’t be that high for us every year though, last year my husband switched jobs. Like others have said you have to register for self assessment.
What is the link please so I can claim it -:-

Just to add if you earn over the threshold and don’t want to be paid it only to have to pay it back, go through the process anyway and then select the option for not wanting to receive it. It will affect national insurance if you don’t. The letter stating we have chosen not to receive it has also been helpful for other things where we have had to prove her existence!
Everyone is entitled to child benefit doesn’t matter how much you earn x
