Reducing milk

Anyone else struggling to reduce milk intake? My LO was drinking almost 40oz of formula (5 bottles of 8oz, but she didn't always finish the first bottle) before she turned one. Now her pediatrician says she's only allowed 18oz total (still giving a mixture of milk and formula because of constipation). Pediatrician said reduce the ounces each bottle, so I've been dropping each to 6oz. She throws the biggest fit when there's nothing left and won't stop crying and screaming until she gets more. She only drinks 2 of the 3 bottles at school now, when previously she drank all 3. But when she gets her night bottle, she winds up drinking like 15oz to make up for what was missed as school. She drinks about 4oz of water a day, gets breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack at school. Then has dinner at home. Not sure what to do and her pediatrician is pretty useless because she just keeps saying try harder

So I'm going at girlys pace. I've upped snacks/meal sizes to help lower milk. We don't do a morning milk and most days we are off of nap milk. But the no nap milk only really started when I switched to giving her a sippy cup of milk with breakfast/mid morning snack. We still do bedtime bottle (except for tonight) and usually it's similar where it's like 15oz to make up for not having as much. But slowly oh so slowly we have gone from 36oz a day to like 18-24oz a day. I say don't stress it. Just keep making small shifts and changes. Pick which battle to start with. For us we started with no morning bottle. But don't try to do all of it all at once. That only seems to put us backwards when we try that.

My ped says 24 oz is the max now. I would say that when she finishes her bottle and wants more, then offer water or a snack instead. She's either still hungry or thirsty but if you give her more milk, she's drinking too many calories in milk that she should be eating from other foods. So water might satisfy her need to suck for comfort..? But it won't fill her up so she'll be hungry enough to eat more at meal time.

Tbh - my son still drinks formula and we give him whatever ounces he wants and needs. Fed is best even if it’s just formula! My son eats a lot during the day. Our pediatrician said to not give him more than 16oz a day. So idk! We haven’t tried milk again since the last time we gave him cows milk — he was constipated and had hives ):

I would try to switch her from a bottle to a sippy cup. They tend to drink faster/more when it’s from a bottle. If you give the milk in a sippy cup maybe she’ll drink it slower and then won’t be so mad when it’s gone. I got my daughter down to 4-4oz sippy cups and she adjusted pretty well. Sometimes gets mad when the sippy cup is empty but i just distract her with something else or give water instead. Try feeding solids before milk every time. If they’re getting milk when they’re really hungry then they’re likely to drink more. Especially in the morning give solids first when she’s really hungry and then afterwards give milk. They learn pretty quickly that the main nutrition comes from solids now and not milk!
