Colostrum

I haven’t been collecting colostrum and now worried I should have been. Can anyone advise if this will have any problems on breast feeding once baby is here?

No don’t worry at all! Some people aren’t even able to collect beforehand, this does not at all impact your supply once baby is here!

I got a little bit but it’s still in the freezer to use in the future if she’s under the weather etc. She latched immediately after surgery and BF is going well so I haven’t needed it! (I did BF my first for 3 years) I wouldn’t worry about it xx

I wasn’t able to collect colostrum in pregnancy and had no issues with breastfeeding I just gave my son bottles till my milk came in on day 3

No don't worry at all. I tried and tried to harvest 3 weeks before I gave birth and NOTHING was coming out. Literally half an hour after giving birth, the midwife put him on my chest and hand expressed some for him for him to then latch onto me. I was so shocked it came straight away after birth when I couldn't get any prior :) Also my left breast even after birth took 24 hours to come in, and as I stayed in hospital for a second night due to complications, they got a pump on my boob to massage it and try and express and now my left boob produces more than my right :) so don't worry, but seek lots of help once baby is here! Xx

Thank you that’s really helpful x

I didn't at all with my first and I BF him until he was 18months old

Expressing during pregnancy has no impact on your supply or ability to breastfeed after birth. It's just if there's complications having some colostrum spare can sometimes be helpful. With my first I had a lot of issues getting him to latch the first few days, I hadn't harvested colostrum so had none to hand. But instead the midwives gave me syringes and helped guide me to express in hospital and then did also give me a pump to use once my milk started coming in and then I cup fed him some. I did all this whilst still trying to get him into the breast which we did manage to achieve in the end. So even if there is issues when baby is here there are options without having already got colostrum.
