Potty training - first outing

So tomorrow will be day 3 of potty training my little boy and we haven’t left the house over the last few days. He is doing really well and only had 1 accident today which is a massive improvement from yesterday. How did people find it when they first started going out? I plan on only doing a quick trip to the park but the park near us doesn’t have any public toilets so where do I change him if he has a accident especially as it’s freezing cold at the minute 🤷🏻‍♀️

Take a potty, two minutes in the cold is better than wet clothes!! We potty trained last summer so thankfully it was warm but I think I’d still do that now x

I will be taking a potty, sorry I didn’t mention that in the post.. I just meant if he forgets to tell me he needs to go and has a accident x

Constantly ask him, every 5 minutes, it’ll be irritating but this how how we cracked it cause while he’s playing he’ll forget! And there probably will be an accident but that’s ok, just put something easy to pull off him quick put dry on and carry on! He’ll be ok x

And if you’re taking the car, change in the car x

Make sure he uses the potty just before you leave. Then he should be ok. I knew that my daughter used the potty about every 2 hours when we started the potty training. So I made her wee before we went to the playground and returned home in time for her to use the potty. We have a travel potty that we take with us but we started the potty training late November and same as you I worried about accidents in the cold weather.

My little girl started last week, we did pull ups for the first few days whilst we were out and about but took them off as soon as we got home, then after her doing this and doing brilliantly I decided to go cold turkey with the nappies. We make her go for a wee before we go in the car or go anywhere. But she goes to the childminder now in the day and she goes in the car to hers and then she walks her to playgroups. She’s literally had no accidents with wees at all. I’ve even managed a couple of trips to the shops and school pick ups for my son. She’s amazed me and just been perfect, we’ve got a travel potty but not needed to use it. The only thing she hasn’t mastered is poos. She does them in her pants but I think that’s because she’s scared to use the potty for a poo. 😂😩

Is it possible perhaps to put a nappy over the pants? Then if there’s an accident whilst out and about it should be absorbed. I’ve also been wondering about outings and car trips and how to navigate those when we properly start potty training, especially as I have a 5 month old in tow

@Lydia this doesn’t work “usually” because they still have the right feeling of having a nappy on and cognitively they don’t understand they can’t wee in the nappy so still do! Plus once they’ve learnt to potty train they don’t like being wet anymore so will just want changing anyway, they’ll still leak with a nappy on so it’s probably less messy just to go without, we brought a portable potty and just used to pull over as soon as he said he needed a wee x

I used pull ups when out and about until he was 90% there with potty training for a good few weeks. After that, I could estimate how long he goes between wees :) as time has gone on his bladder is able to hold for much longer. I don’t drive, but if I did, a puppy pad to line the seat with may be a good idea? Xxx
