Measuring baby?

Hi all, this may be a really stupid question (first time mum) at my 20 week can, they said that’s it now, you will get more scans if baby is measuring small or big. How will my midwife know if the baby is measuring small or big? If they measure your stomach how would they know what your stomach measurements were before you were pregnant? This is probably a really silly question😂

They measure your bump and track it on a growth chart with average lines on. (Like how percentiles work for babies). X

It’s not really measuring your stomach, it’s called your fundal height measurement and goes off a growth chart that they plot individually for you but compares to average sizes. Honestly though it’s a lot of guess work. It’s so hard to get accurate measurements of baby even right up at full term because if they’re in an awkward position it can throw it off massively. The whole way through with my first they said she was measuring small then right at the end said she’d be over 10lbs and were worried she’d be too big, she was overdue by 10 days and still only 8lbs6 x

So they measure your bump and it goes against a chart, if your overweight and they don’t think they will get an accurate measurement that’s when you get referred for growth scans at 32 and 36 weeks to check growth 🙂 (used to be 28 weeks to buy my hospital literally changed the policy last month on it)

I only had 2 scans with both my children 12 week & 20 week one, and didn't get any after that my son was born at 40 plus 6 days and my daughter at 39 weeks exactly induction and this time round I've had my 12 week scan and 20 week scan but booked in for growth scans at 32 and 35 weeks and consultant led due to possible pre clmapsia and due to having small babies previously and this baby is measuring how it should be but they need to keep an eye as both mine measured perfectly then born quite small x

They will use a chart to determine it x
