I was able to stay on my medication while pregnant and breastfeeding, so I think it actually helped me avoid ppd. The first 5 months were stressful enough, can’t imagine doing it without the mood stabilizer. As they got older and I had to start helping them co-regulate, I’ve really made an effort to calm myself down instead of flying off the handle. You can’t model calmness if you’re not calm 😅 I’m human and slip up, for sure, and I’ve gotten better at learning my triggers (overstimulation rage is a real thing!!), but overall becoming a mother has forced to me keep my mental health in check more than ever before.
I have bpd and becoming a mom definitely saved my life. I understand why 50% answered that it made them less stable, but for me almost all of my issues stemmed from feeling that I had no purpose in life and just felt like I was floundering with no direction. Becoming a mom gave me a purpose and a reason to wake up each day and taught me what unconditional love really looks like because I don't have a good relationship with either of my parents. My daughter is my entire world and I'm so grateful for her. My problems were mostly situational though, so if it's something like bipolar that's a chemical imbalance only medication can help.
You definitely need to rebalance your hormones and vitamins postpartum. A good supplement goes a long way honestly.
