Speech (need advice)

My little one doesn't seem to want to talk. He understands a lot of words but will not say them himself. All he really says is mama and dada but even those are rare. What can I do? Should I be concerned?

My LO is in same boat. Has no interest in copying/imitating us.

Little ones will ‘switch’ between skills at this age - you’ll see some children are more advanced with their physical skills, some will catch onto counting a lot earlier than others, some are fantastic with their speech, and others are wonders socially. Their strongest skill can change even from week to week, depending on how their brain is developing. As parents, we just want to do the best for our children, but honestly don’t stress, they will do things in their own time. Be proud of their strengths (as I’m sure you are!) and quietly monitor their weaknesses 🙂 If your child’s speech hasn’t progressed by his next HV session, it may be worth mentioning it to the HV as they can make a referral to speech and language therapy if needed 🙂

@Bethany thank you X he's great with everything else but he just doesn't seem interested in speaking X I can see something it's frustrating for him because he's trying to tell me something but I don't know what he wants and he starts getting upset x

Oh bless him, this is such a hard age for them when they have so much to say but not the words to get it out!! ❤️

My son is the same, yet to really get any proper words from him. But his motor / fine skills are very good. We’ve cut down screen time loads and started singing nursery rhymes to him (which he absolutely loves!) nursery put a referral in for speech and language therapy but they rejected it as he’s too young for them yet x

@Jacelyn I'm trying to cut down screen time too. It's difficult when you're a busy parent but I'm worried that's the issue. Hopefully it's not going to be too much of an issue in the future x
