Are oats an allergen? Do I need to introduce separately?

This may be a silly question but I’m very cautious with my 6 month old 😊

Yes they are as it’s gluten x

Anything can be an allergen. There’s no need to introduce anything separately unless you or baby’s father have allergies

Gluten is an allergen, oats are technically not considered a common allergen; but kids can still be allergic to it. My daughter has multiple allergies and we suspected that she might have been allergic to oats, but she was tested for an oat allergy and it was negative. The immunologist informed us that you can be fine with gluten, but still allergic to oats as a separate allergy. It’s good to start with small amounts either way with anything new and build up the amount as you go. If there are things your suspect may be causing issues, try and isolate them from the days when you introduce something new.

@Jessica unfortunately this isn’t true. I have a child with multiple allergies, including an EpiPen for potential anaphylaxis for some. Neither me or my husband have food allergies, but have hayfever and asthma in our family, which can increase risk of allergies. Unfortunately, allergies are becoming worse for kids these days due to all these modified foods or exposure. My little one has allergies and sensitivities to things which aren’t considered allergens and are uncommon. If there’s any doubts, sometimes it’s better to start slowly

Amazing thanks guys. I did think so but always doubt myself. I have been following the Ella’s kitchen guides and introducing allergens one at a time so we have been doing a new one each week at the moment. I find it easier that way to look out for any potential side effects. It’s great to hear I’m on the right track x

Yep my son is allergic to chickpeas but nothing else. Me and dad aren’t allergic to anything but have hay fever and asthma so it definitely is worth introducing allergens or any new foods separately! Even things you wouldn’t expect to be an allergen can be and cause a reaction, maybe not as significant but just causing a rash etc is still an allergy. You’re definitely doing the right thing! I found once I gave the allergen or food by itself I would do the next 3 days mixed with things I’d already tested and knew he was safe with so he was still testing the food multiple times before I decided it was definitely safe x
