Also been on Althéra for the past 4 weeks and the consistency is soo watery yes! It just looks like yellow water to me🥲 I still also breastfeed so I’m like well I guess my breastmilk is sometimes that watery too so doesn’t really matter? But we are going to ask doctor for the Alfamino formula as he’s still reacting and some Carobel to thicken it for the reflux symptoms today 🤞🏼
All the prescription milks are super thin! I just bought some carobel to thicken it (I use about half the recommended dose). It’s quite normal for them to take a while to get used to it, I had to introduce it really slowly over a week to get my girl to take it (after she full on refused nutramigen and pepti 1) we have since moved to alfamino which was a simple swap though
Yes was absolutely fobbed off with colic. Went to urgent care and the doctor heard him crying the whole time and I had said the other symptoms he had and told my doctors to prescribe sma althera. It was so gross smelt foul and made his farts stink🤮 he's now on neonate after reacting to althera
My baby has been on SMA for nearly 4 months now i had tried every other formula and he was coming up in either rashes or hives and boaking with them and have been arguing with the GP and health visitors for the last 5 months to get it on prescription as its a 30 minute drive for me to get this formula and they seem to not care or want to help
@Niamh is it regular sma you are using? Does your baby have any other symptoms?
You can buy carobel to thicken it from the chemist, our paediatrician told us to use it - we ended up going to a private allergy peadiatrician as the gp was so unhelpful. In our area the gp can’t prescribe alfamino until it had been prescribed by the specialists as it’s so expensive. You can try either vanilla extract or strawberry nesquik if the baby is refusing it because of the taste and just reduce the amount back down slowly until the baby takes it with no vanilla/nesquik. It is very different to the milk formula so it will take time for the baby to get used to it. Alfamino tastes a lot worse than althera.
@Elsha if you are breastfeeding at the same time it may be something in your milk he’s reacting to. My baby was put on althera and then alfamino but he was reacting to eggs in the breastmilk, in hindsight I don’t think he had a problem with althera but the breastmilk was affecting it. Just something to consider if the baby is still ill on alfamino because it is easier to get the baby to take althera as it tastes slightly better. I wish we’d have tried switching back as it was a real battle to get him to drink alfamino.
@Sarah I thought this but after cutting dairy he’s really happy after breastfeeding and we only ever have issues straight after a bottle, it’s easy to notice as he only has about 1 or 2 bottles a day and it’s then that he has mucous poops and arching back again:/ I’d completely breastfeed but in the day he mostly refuses it as he has a severe tongue tie still waiting to be sorted so he struggles to latch and only will when he’s sleeping x
@Lauryn no SMA Alfamino and was having diarrhoea, vomiting, rashes and eczema, a persistent cough and trouble breathing at night
My baby has been on SMA Althera since last Wednesday so almost a week. For a few days she wasn’t really drinking much either. But I’ve started to notice a difference now so that’s good!!! It’s definitely such a weird consistency and leaves the bottles feeling disgusting😬 but definitely hang in there! I’ve been told you should give it at least 2 weeks xx
