Maternity Pay

This may be an obvious question but I’m so confused! My workplace pays 5 months full pay followed by SMP until week 39 of mat leave. If I’m taking 52 weeks leave does that mean I receive nothing for the remaining 12/13 weeks? Or is there anything else I can claim during this time? I’m not entitled to a sure start grant or anything like that - any advice or other experiences would be much appreciated!

Yeh, you’ll be without pay for the final 3 months. It will depend on your household income if you’re entitled to any additional support, but a lot of the time it will just be your child benefit.

Yeah nothing after 39 weeks is pretty standard. I saved up a years worth of bank holidays and holidays and took the last month off as that to get some wage in again

Nothing. I used my keeping in touch days during last few months. Just to slowly get into routine and to have something going into my bank account and used some of my holidays also to stay home longer.

Could you ask your company to spread the 5 months full pay to 12 months?

If you have accrued annual leave you could end your 'maternity' a little earlier than the 52 weeks and use leave for the remainder. You can also apply for universal credit while on maternity pay, i did that when my mat dropped to statutory and although we didnt get lots as its based on household income, we got a bit which helped❤️

Yey pretty standard. I saved holidays and carried over extra from previous year and then spilt my holidays over the remaining months 1/2 month holidays 1/2 month unpaid worked out similar to stat pay

Yes you will get no pay for the remaining months. You need to save to cover your costs or use your carried over time off to get full pay for a number of weeks. Alternatively you will have to return to work sooner than you anticipated. You do get a number of KIT days. I think it is a max of 10 to get some money in but wouldn’t be for an extended period of time but would have to sort out childcare. That might not be worth your while if you don’t have family to do you a favour.

You’ll also get £102 per month of child benefit which helps a little. It probably doesnt seem like it but 5 months of full pay is actually a really good package 🙈
