Does anyone make their own moisturiser? Tips/advice needed plz

So my son has a coconut allergy. Literally everything on the market has coconut in it! I’m currently spending £80 to ship a coconut free shampoo and conditioner from the states for my son however moisturisers are another battle! How do I turn something like cocoa butter or Shea butter into a moisturiser that will actually moisturise? I have followed online recipes for ones that don’t contain any coconut of any kind and I don’t find them hydrating enough for either mine or my son’s skin! I’m currently using fifty:fifty which is like a looser version of Vaseline but this also doesn’t really moisturise! I’m having to apply it on our skin when still wet in the bath and then by the time we wake in the morning we are dry again and applying it to dry skin is like just putting a film over your skin where nothing penetrates! I have the same thing with the Shea and cocoa butter! How do I turn them into actual hydrating moisturisers that’s safe for a baby?

My little one has been getting some really dry patches and I told my sis in law who ordered this for us - it's honestly made a big difference so I've been using it on myself too lol. Very thick. It smells a bit funky cus it's natural but it's totally worth it imo. https://www.back2droots.com/collections/natural-healing/products/organic-healing-balm?variant=28386465351

At a quick glance at the ingredients, these moisturisers don’t look like they have coconut in them. Just double check xx https://www.boots.com/la-roche-posay-baby-lipikar-ap-syndet-h-10264799?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAA-AdmwRl3fh8_EPGHv2EUu5ed0Sji&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_NC9BhCkARIsABSnSTYusa1KousB2CMsvv5utyrSV58mK7ofhWglKWfxLQABaMAyvv-IRg8aAkt2EALw_wcB https://www.kiehls.co.uk/body/category/body-moisturisers/mum-baby-nurturing-baby-cream/1803.html?awc=15733_1739907246_22e731b355078bbcd6c305536f8cd449&utm_source=awin&utm_medium=all_affiliate&utm_campaign=https%3A%2F%2Fshopforward.nl%2F&utm_content=Comparison+Shopping+Service+%28CSS%29

maybe try melting together shea butter with another oil like jojoba, almond or calendula. that’s how i make mine, i use coconut too but you can leave it out. just melt it all together then put it in the fridge for a few hours to thicken it up. you could also add cocoa butter or beeswax

Have you tried tallow? It's rendered beef fat

Have you looked into tallow? It’s meant to be amazing!! I’m going to try when we’ve used up our current moisturiser xx

@Betty lol, I just said this. We use it, I really like it. But so does our dog.

@Amanda ahahahah it never crossed my mind about the dog 🤣 does he/she lick you afterwards? 😂

Yes! And he follows me closer than normal. It's pretty funny

@Sam wow and no coconut derivatives either! Thank you!

@Evie unfortunately the first link you provided has a load of coconut derivatives (see the obvious ones that start with Coco-) the middle one has a few ingredients that can be derived from coconut such as the glycerin, alcohols and glucoside just to name a few that appear. The shampoo also has cocamidopropyl betaine which is derived from coconut oil. There are over 140 coconut derivatives hidden in absolutely everything it’s so difficult!

@Izzie a few recipes online also advised mixing with other oils which I tried and it was just too thick and created like a barrier instead of a hydrating moisturiser. It’s like it needs some kind of water added but obviously oil and water don’t mix, many emulsifiers that allow them to mix are coconut derived🤦🏽‍♀️

@Amanda and @Betty 😂lol. Nah I haven’t used tallow even though I keep seeing it, something about using animal fat oils is a bit off putting for absolutely no plausible reason 🤦🏽‍♀️ does it have any kind of skin benefits? And most importantly… is it hydrating?

@Shay most welcome, I hope it works for your little one. It's definitely made a big difference for us and also helps keep my niece's eczema at bay

@Shay oh gosh, that does sound so difficult! I didn’t realise there was so much that derived from coconut!

@Evie yeah, when he was a baby (a few weeks old) he had a nasty full body break out and I just thought he was allergic to the brand of soap and body salve I used on him so I stopped and it was so bad he needed steroids to bring it down. However I found I was never fully able to stop using the steroids for too long as I felt he was reacting to every lotion I tried him with every single soap.. everything! I thought damn he has some really bad eczema! It wasn’t until I weaned him that I started to notice a correlation between his issues and coconut. I used coconut milk in his oat bath and coconut oil on his skin when he was a few months old and his skin came up but I wasn’t 100% sure but I stopped using it regardless. Then I noticed when he had some of my coconut yoghurt once his mouth blew up! It happened a few times that really made me so sure. Then I got him allergy tested and sure enough he was allergic to coconut! He never had eczema this whole time, it was a reaction to coconut🤦🏽‍♀️☠️
