Helping talking

Hey everyone, I’m a first time mum and my baby doesn’t really like us reading to him, he never has! He does like the baby touch books and we can get through those, as well as the “that’s not my..”. I also talk to him constantly through the day but I’m worried that him not liking being read to us going to hinder his speech development? What else can I do to be ensuring I’m on top of this? Thanks x

Reading is good because it means that YOU are talking to baby loads. All you have to do is talk to your baby a lot. My baby likes me talking but to get her to sit still long enough for me to read her a story is almost impossible, so I kinda just pick a book to read out loud while she plays around.

There are a few short books he will sit and go through with us but often I just let him play around and read aloud to him but any talking you are doing is all going to help them learn to talk. There are some phrases I say all the time and now he kind of understands so it's all going in e.g. I say up before I lift him and now he lifts his arms to me

Nursery rhymes are brilliant for speech development. But like Jayde and Flo have said just keep talking and narrating your day to him. My little one loves looking at flash cards too so they're a good option 👍🏻 xx

I don’t read to my baby but there’s loads of us taking to her all day. We narrate / sing / use repetitive phrases. When it’s rhyme time at the library - can honestly say baby doesn’t focus on the story teller. My mum and aunt always reflect on me as a baby as I could hold a conversation at 14 months 😂
