Toddler wants to start breastfeeding?

I have an almost 16 month old boy and I’m 18 weeks pregnant with my daughter. I started to lactate mostly lymph fluid and I know that’s normal. My breastfeeding journey with my son ended early at 3 months as we couldn’t figure a latch together and it was better for us to formula feed. I’ve never had an issue with it that’s just backstory. ANYWAY we were snuggling up today and he tried to latch through my shirt and pulled it down to latch on my breast directly. Google is no help lol does anyone have advice on this or why it’s happening?

Ehhh, I personally wouldn’t start, for a multitude of reasons. How do you feel about it?

@Brittany I’m not interested in starting at all I’ve just never heard of this and was looking to see if anyone has ever experienced it lol

Ahh ok! Ya I’ve never heard of this either 😅

My little boy stopped breastfeeding at 15 months then started again at 20 months when baby brother was born - but never known a baby who hasn’t been bf to start as a toddler - totally up to you though how to carry on :) ❤️

i’ve heard it can cause miscarriages or preterm labor, i’m not a doctor i just don’t want anybody getting hurt. maybe there’s a way though, try talking with your OB or midwife about it. i haven’t heard of it either but it’s so sweet he’s trying to bond with mommy before the new baby comes🥺❤️

If it were me, I would gently tell him no and distract him with a toy or something. If you weren’t already nursing before getting pregnant, then the nipple stimulation could cause contractions. After baby is born, if he sees baby nursing and wants to try, it’s totally up to you on whether you’ll let him or you’ll tell him it’s just for babies

That is weird/randon he did that outta nowhere. maybe he senses you are pregnant and is want to stay the baby if that makes sense. Kinda like when the baby is out and they try to do that maybe he's doing that typa thing.

@Alysha Mattox I've been breastfeeding my son the whole way through my pregnancy, currently 36 weeks. I've been assured by my midwives and GP that women have been tandem feeding for centuries and there is no link to preterm birth etc. Apparently the oxytocin receptors on your uterus only turn on when your body is ready for labour to start, but I'm not sure how it works if you've not breastfed before and then start.

@krystal that was my thoughts but like I said Google was no help no matter how I phrased it. My husband and I have been keeping him involved in the pregnancy as much as possible but obviously there’s only so much he can fully understand lol. I’m glad you had the same theory as me!

@Yas omg! thank you for that info, i was wanting to pump as soon as i can (im only 9weeks pregnant) to have milk stored!

@Alysha Mattox have a chat to your GP and confirm it's all good. Do you mean you're still feeding your first or do you want to start pumping for your current pregnancy? If your milk had gone away after your first child then I think it won't come in again until after birth and after colostrum starts at 36 weeks.

start pumping for my current, ahh yeah my first is 2yo so i’ll have to wait anyway but as soon as colostrum comes i’ll ask about that for sure. thanks again, i was terrified after i saw it can cause contractions but I’ll least ask about at my first appt. @Yas

I would start now, but after you have your newborn then you can start pumping and give him a sippy cup…your toddler is still pretty small so it may just be instinctive

My guess is that your son is picking up on the fact there will be another child and is just wanting to be a baby. My 3 year old has wanted to be carried and rocked as if he is a baby recently just like his sister is. I'm sure there is an element of jeoulosy there but a bigger part of it is him looking for connection with me. I wouldn't start breastfeeding him again but I will hold him like a baby for as long as he wants.
