Thyroid

I had my blood test results back from the IVF clinic and my thyroid is underactive, it came back its 10 when it should be 2.5 or there abouts. So the clinic have postponed my treatment until I can get that down. I now have to go and see my local GP about having medication. Has anyone had this before?

Yes I did I have been on thyroid medication for 2 years now. I think it’s just a stop gap. It doesn’t really change anything. Since I have been on the medication, my thyroid has improved but I still had failed IUI and Ivf

Ok thank you and sorry to hear that

Yes I had these exact numbers too! Mine was spotted during routine bloods when we were TTC so before our IVF journey we even began. It did take quite a while for them to get the levels of medication right to lower my TSH without raising the T4! And we were advised to stop TTC until it was under 2.5. It was hard but you balance that against the risk of getting pregnant with a high TSH which increases MC risk

@Laura ah thanks Laura. Honestly had no idea. The nurse from the fertility clinic called me yesterday about it and she named some symptoms and I had them all without even realising it was that! Just waiting on a phone call from the doctor now.

It’s so common now! But you don’t know you have it unless you test. They’ll likely start you on a low dose (around 50mcg per day) and then retest your bloods in around 6 weeks and keep tweaking your medication and re-testing the bloods until your levels are sufficiently down 🤞🏻

Yes I’ve also been on meds when we were TTC and investigating infertility. My levels were normal for a normal person but too high for someone trying to conceive, so it’s a factor they look into. I’m currently pregnant from our first FET and have been instructed to continue to take the meds throughout my pregnancy.

@Laura thank you for that, all information helps. The nurse said I need something called Levothyroxine. I read on the NHS website that medication means I will be on it for life. Not sure how true that is.

@Candy yeah I think thats the case with me as we’re going through IVF. Ah congratulations!

No problem 🫶🏻 It can be quite daunting when it first happens and you know nothing about it. Yes levothyroxine is something you will be on for life to control the thyroid. It’s 1-2 tablets (depending on your dose) every morning as soon as you wake up, 30/45 mins before food or caffeine. You get used to it to be honest, I’ve been on them 4 years now and don’t give it a second thought. It will be more closely monitored during IVF but you’ll generally need to go for bloods a couple of times a year (depending on your doctor wants) to be able to review your levels/medication

@Laura thank you so much, thats really helpful. Yeah it was abit of a shock to be honest with you, wasn’t expecting that yesterday. I’m glad I know now. That makes alot of sense, it might even help me to feel better in myself. I wondered why I was feeling tired and low xx

I was so tired!! I was like falling asleep on the sofa at 8pm at night and couldn’t figure out why…always good to know there’s a reason for things ☺️ Good luck 🤞🏻 xx

@Laura just spoke to the doctor, he has prescribed me Levothyroxine as predicted and will be on them for life. Just got to pick an exemption certificate from the doctors reception as I don’t need to pay which is a nice surprise xxx

Oh yeah I forgot that bit 😃 Free NHS prescriptions for life 👌🏻 What dose have they started you off on? Xx

@Laura yeah thats pretty good not having to pay. He has started me on 50mg and said that should bring it down quite quickly xxx

Yeah I’ve been on levothyroxine for 5 years. My clinic wanted my results to be at 1. Just call the docs with your blood results and say your clinic needs you to get it down to whatever they said. They should prescribe Levothyroxine. And the good news is you don’t have to pay for prescriptions ever again haha
