@Emma yeah so I’m thinking I’ll try and take annual leave before maternity. My employer doesn’t provide maternity pay so it’s government SMP
This is exactly what I’m doing, I’m on SMP but took 2 weeks holiday and tagged on 2 weeks at the end. I’m only taking 7 months so want to save holidays for later in the year. Holidays will be full pay 😊
One thing to consider is your mat leave will trigger the day after the baby is born. So you can't be on holiday when u have the baby and trigger mat leave later if that makes sense.
It’s company discretion to when you take it. Normally you have to take your holidays before your offical maternity pay starts then while your off you accrual holiday entitlement still but depends when your holidays run from as well. What do you do to get 8 weeks leave?
@Shell so the 8 weeks it’s what I’ll get from May onwards, I’ve got 2 weeks left to use in April which I’ve booked off already. The rest is holiday entitlement after April. So I don’t think I could take it before then anyways?
So your holidays are May to May? What do you do to get 8 weeks? It’s company discretion when you take them either at end or start of maternity but if they don’t pay maternity then maybe they can’t contradict that…
@Shell yeah kind of. So I work term time contract just not at a school so my HR said I get my usual holiday time off when I’m on maternity leave. My qualifying week is next week so I’m going to discuss with HR exactly what’s what then. But I’m assuming I can maybe take annual leave in May for 4 weeks then once baby is born start maternity leave then use my additional holiday towards the end? It’s all so confusing
Im taking 4 weeks annual leave at the end of my maternity, I preferred having more time with baby than time beforehand x
Yes you can take it at either end… I took a week before and then 6 weeks after. Some can be funny though and ask you take it before or after… You’d be on full pay when on leave… your maternity ends and you return to work on leave… You’d still be entitled to what you have accrued, but any enhanced mat pay usually needs to be paid back
