No it is not saying to not fast. He was describing why for that time they were not. But he was making a point about himself and fasting. Fasting was meant as a way to draw closer to God. The Pharisees abused this and would publicly make a scene about their religiosity and fasting and it was not about God. When we are hungry our natural desire is to fill that void with food. This spiritual practice is to fill the void with God. However… the disciples had God with them! Literally before them in their presence. Israel is called the bride of God. And so in this way Jesus was making a claim about himself and that so long as he is present… they had no need to fast to draw any nearer to Him. We can fast today as part of our practice, but do so privately. Do not make a scene of it. It’s meant to be holy time between you and God.

Jesus was speaking specifically about his disciple at that time. He was one Earth with them (He’s the bridegroom that he’s speaking of) so as Janis said, no point of fasting when they were in the very company and presence of God daily. That’s like when we will be in Eternity with God we won’t need to fast then either. But in Matthew 6 Jesus encouraged to pray and even says how to

Thank you ❤️and what would be the good reasons or purpose to fast?

Throughout the Bible we see people fast as a way to repent, to get closer to God, for breakthrough, being obedient to God who led them to fast (Jesus in Matthew 4 & Luke 4) and more. You can Fast for any reason really like wanting to hear God’s voice on a specific thing or simply to get closer to God.
