Chewing fingers

My son has started chewing on his hands and fingers.... It's very random. He's never done that before. He used to have a paci but he's been without it for a couple months. Could this be some kind of soothing thing? He'll be watching TV or playing with toys and have a hand or fingers in his mouth 🤷‍♀️ Anyone else see their toddler do this?
