Does anyone work in HR etc...?

Hey ladies. Hoping someone can give me a bit of advice. I've been back at work around a month now after mat leave. So, not long. I had to go to a hospital appointment for my baby. It's one that I cleared with my manager a couple of weeks ago.. and I got given the all-clear. It's a monthly appointment. That last month, my partner took the day off work to take him to. So I've missed a few hours of work to go to his hospital appointment once since being back. Moving forward, all of his hospital appointments will be on my days off. So it is quite literally this one day which was pre arranged. It's a hospital appointment that I can't miss wotj my child's health condition/disability. Also, nursery rang me a couple of weeks ago to come and pick him up as he had vomited with a tummy bug that had been going around. I have had a comment made to me that really I only get 3 paid absences with a child. What is everyone's knowledge on this? If its a pre arranged hospital appointment where I have been out of work for a few hours of the day (where it's not possible to make the time up in my job) And then I got a phone call to come and pick him up with vomiting. What's everyone's thoughts/knowledge of this please, as it would be good to know.. are these classed as absences? Thanks

Not the best advice but It really depends on your own contract - with mine, I don’t get any paid leave regarding dependents - if baby is sick I either have to take it off my annual leave or make my hours up/take it unpaid xx

Legally parental leave is unpaid, it’s up to the company / your contract if they want to pay you. If it was planned in, my company would expect you to take that as annual leave or make up the hours. For unexpected illness if it’s over half a day it would be countered as an absence, then it would depend how close they were, if it’s becoming a pattern, the odd day would be fine to be paid, if it was a few days or often then unpaid, annual leave or make up time would be expected

HR Advisor here 😊 Three paid days is very generous!! Most employers will put it down as unpaid leave. If an employee at my company couldn’t afford an unpaid day I would tell them to book it as annual leave. Or speak with their line manager to work the time back if it was only a couple of hours. It all depends on your job, if you work from home, your companies flexibility and company policy. But in short, you are lucky to get three paid days. There is also no limit to how many days you take off for dependant care which is helpful if you do have a poorly bub. Hope this helps! Xx

Yep, no paid absences here for that kind of thing! 3 days is pretty generous!

I don’t get any paid leave, and any time off I take I have to use annual leave or make up the hours.

Yes I am the same, I have 3 paid dependents leave days (which I used in the first month of going back because the nursery lurgies are insane). Then it should be unpaid. Depends on flexibility of your employer, sometimes if they ring me to get her I can organise child care with family so I take an hour or two to sort it and then make up the hours. It’s really tricky when they first start though, hope you’re ok!
