Formula Feeding

LO is 2 weeks old and way above birth weight. We’re responsive feeding and on average LO needs a feed every 2 hours. Is this normal? We keep reading (and hoping) it should be more 3-4 hours in between feeds. The whole feed, change and settle process takes about an hour so it’s then not long before his next feed which is quite tiring 😴 Are we doing something wrong? Please advise😞

Have you checked for any trapped wind that might be left after burping. Trapped wind can make babies think they're still hungry when they're not

Is he still hungry after feeding? Our son transitioned to 3-4 hours between once he was getting enough. He goes back to 2 hours between when he starts wanting more again

Might just be a hungry baby, what size teat are you using baby shouldn't be drinking for nearly an hour. In first few weeks they do go through a lot of growing and they have no routine. My baby didn't start drinking every 3-4hrs until about 9 weeks. First few weeks they r meant to be all ove the place so ur doing absolutely everything right. Maybe increase the amount of formula u give in 1 sitting if they r finishing the bottles 80% of the time, ignore the guidance on the tubs they r not very helpful, alternative you could look into hungry baby formula if u feel like they aren't being satisfied by regular formula x

Baby is only two weeks so feeding every 2 hours is totally normal. Both of mine were the same x

Sounds exactly like my baby, he tends to go with shorter gaps through the day and then much longer at nighttime. He has had a huge growth spurt so that could be it? We’ve switched to size 1 teats and will be upping his formula quantity tomorrow. Our process is also around an hour, no one seems concerned about this when they’ve visited us, on the contrary they seem happy as it’s showing he’s not guzzling his bottles too quickly. I’d say try changing the formula quantity and teat sizes if you haven’t but may be worth speaking to your health visitor/midwife and they can come and see him feeding. I wouldn’t recommend changing to any type of specialist formulas without asking a health professional first x

At 2 weeks this seems pretty normal to me, even when formula feeding babies can go through cluster feeding periods during development changes. You could try upping the bottle by 30ml if they’re draining it every time and seeing if that helps?

Even formula fed newborns typically eat every 2-3 hours. They will eat this frequently for the first few weeks at least and as they take more volume the time between feeds will lengthen. 4 hours between feeds for a newborn is a really long time. How much formula are you offering at each feed? Could you offer slightly more? Your baby could also be “cluster feeding” if they want to eat very frequently, even seeming hungry as little as an hour after last eating, which they will do during times of growth spurts- generally around 2-3 weeks, 6 weeks, 6 months and 9 months old. Cluster feeding is a natural response to their bodies rapid growth/ development and in breastfed babies helps establish/ regulate the mother’s milk supply. As for weight gain, newborns typically gain about 7 oz per week so after only two weeks they will be almost a whole pound heavier! They should continue to gain weight at this rate until it slows down to about 4-5 oz per week at about 3-4 months.
