Making bottles wrong??

I think I've been making my formula bottles wrong and now I feel real mum guilt. I've been boiling the kettle and only leaving it for 5 mins to cool before making a bottle and then popping it in the Nuby. I've read on different websites that you should boil the kettle and leave for up to 30 mins but no less than 20 mins? Makes me wonder how you're supposed to make a bottle when a baby is screaming for one if you have to wait 20 mins for the water to not be above 70 degrees? Help 😭

Prep machine saved my life! Perfect temp bottle in less than a minute

@Ames I had thought about in investing in one, but also I've heard different things about them so not sure what to do.

I’ve never had an issue myself and I know lots of people who use them. Just change the filter every so often. Definitely worth it in my opinion xx

Also using a prep machine and absolute life saver. A lot of issues that can o our is when people reuse them with a second baby years later and haven’t deep cleaned them properly. If they are in daily use and filters replaced etc then shouldn’t be any issues. However a friend of mine doesn’t have a prep machine and prepares all her bottles the night before so plenty of time to cool down and puts all of what she needs in the fridge ready for the next day so she only needs to warm the milk as she needs to do a feed.

We prep enough bottles to last for 7 feeds and store them in the fridge, super quick and easy and then just warm them when you are ready to use

If you have a Nuby Rapid Cool, do the hot shot method. Boil kettle. Pour the amount into the bottle. Leave the small amount to kill the bacteria in the formula. Rest of the boiling water in the rapid cool. No waiting as the rapid cool is done in a minute

@Kayleigh he's on too smaller oz bottles at the moment to do that apparently. He's only on 3oz and I think I remember reading that the Nuby only recognises 3oz minimum.

I second the prep machine also take it upstairs for the night feeds it’s a life saver honestly x

We had the prep last time but if we weren’t EBF this time I’d 100% do the Nuby rapidcool or fridge method

My sister.has a method which is similar to the hot shot method which me and my partner are now going to take on board for night feeds. 2 flasks Flask 1 - boiling water Flask 2 - cooled boiled water My LB is having 3 oz bottles so we'll do 1 oz Flask 2 2 oz Flask 2 then We tried the fridge method and wasn't a fan of it, also tried just making them up fresh with the Kettle then cooling the bottle with cold water. I've never left the kettle to boil and I've had no issues x

If your using the nuby rapid cool you can use straight away. We do 1oz hot shot and rest in the nuby to make a bottle and the temp is perfect to give immediately xx

@Beth I second this .. the best way for us too c

I didn’t realise you have to wait 30 mins? I thought you couldn’t use the water if it was after 30 mins? And it had to be at least 70° when making the bottle?

@Jennifer this was my impression too

@Ames second this. Prep machine was a game changer!

@Kimberley I’m 100% sure that’s the case, especially after speaking to the health visitor today and then also just checking the NHS website just now. You make it instantly and don’t leave the kettle for more than 30 minutes after it’s boiled. The water does have to be at least 70° and no lower. So if that’s what you’ve been doing then you’re doing it correctly?

Yeah as far as I’m aware you have to use the boiled water within 30 minutes not after and the water needs to be 70 degrees. Iv been boiling the kettle, mixing it straight away with the formula and then cooling it and then feeding

@Jennifer I suppose I have been doing it correctly, but then another reputable website also said wait to use the water but leave it no longer than 30 mins as if you use boiling water it kills the nutrients in the formula? It's a minefield out there.

@Beth I didnt think you could reheat?

I boil the kettle and use the boiled water straight away, i have a flask of cooled boiled water to add to the bottle to cool down. For example my little girl is now on 4oz so I make 2oz using the boiling water to mix the powder and then add 2oz of the cooled water and give it to her straight away. I don’t have the time to be waiting about if she’s screaming for a bottle 😅

This is all too much. There's a 12 year gap between me and my sister so I remember making her bottles. You used to use cool boiled water and then just warm it up. It was fine. I boil water cool it in nuby and then mix it with formula. I don't put formula in nuby because who has time to sterilise and clean nuby after every use.

@Jennifer fantastic thank you for checking that ill continue doing things the way I'm doing it then x

@Charlotte the reheat method has been used for decades, my health visitor was saying the other day. There will be things the NHS say not to do as they want things done a certain way but ultimately of your babies fed and that method works for you the go for it. The only time to worry is if little one reacted bad to the method, it's all a mind field and trial and error xx

Iv never waited 30 mins for the kettle to cool with either of mine I mix the formula in freshly boiled water every time and I always use the Nuby rapid cool it’s a game changer x
