SSRI

TW: mental health I got diagnosed with PTSD from losing my aunt in a very traumatic way. We were super close, I viewed her as a sister. It was a few years ago. I don’t necessarily want to get into it but I never processed it. I have always been terrified of the mental toll postpartum can have on you. I’ve seen my grandma suffer, my aunt, and a coworker of mine. When I hear these stories it triggers my anxiety and I get horrible intrusive thoughts and panic attacks. I suddenly feel like I have no control over myself. I worked with a therapist before I got pregnant and it helped, however with being pregnant, there’s weeks it’s so bad I can’t stand the thought of being alone. I saw a psychiatrist who explained it more into detail why I feel that way, I felt a lot better and less crazy. She wanted me to take lexapro. I just got the ok from my doctor but I haven’t had anxiety since. Idk if I should hold out on taking it as maybe I won’t get bad again, or if I should start taking it now before it does get bad again. I feel there’s a stigma around meds and I am so scared to take them. Especially since I’m super sensitive to meds. I can’t really tell my family as they aren’t as understanding so I came here.

The thing with psychiatric medications is thwy work differently for different people so the meds could make you feel better but there’s also a small chance they will make you feel worse. If your anxiety is based solely in thinking of one event or over specific triggers, it might be better to try working on coping mechanisms for it first (if you haven’t already done that). If your doctor says it is safe, I would trust them. They can go over any possible risks. I took both Zoloft and lamictal throughout both of my pregnancies and both babies and I were fine.

Hi, i took lexapro with both if my pregnancies. I have been on it for years now. Honestly i felt more depressed when i was pregnant than postpartum and lexapro really helped me with my mood.

You should not take psychiatric medication unless you decide you want to, otherwise it will be less effective. That is from the placebo effect of medication.
