Nurseries in the UK

Dear mums, I wanted to ask you, please - I come from the Czech Republic and nurseries do work differently in Europe. I just wonder if the following is really common in nurseries in the UK or whether it's more specific to our one: basically my little one is very happy there what's amazing ❤️ and teachers are so lovely too. However, me and few more parents who didn't grow up in the UK, are bit concerned/unhappy about the fact that little ones go onto garden no matter what weather is. Also they do water plays in this cold weather and my girl has been soaking wet on multiple occasions (including underwear, despite her having a waterproof all in one). I believe this is a reason why she has had a cold and nasty cough for weeks now.... Please is it really common here in the UK to take kids outside in no matter what weather is and also doing water plays in this cold weather?? If I told the nursery I want to keep her out from these activities or garden times when her friends are outside - she will not understand and will be unhappy.... Will be grateful for your opinion /experience. Thank you :)

Yes it’s totally normal here. But they should be changing her out of her wet clothes as soon as she gets inside so I would maybe query that. You can’t catch a cold or cough from being outside, you’re much more likely to catch one being inside in a closed room with the heating on 😊

Aww yes it’s normal practice, they even took them out in the hail yesterday which they loved! Like Tori said only thing I would query is changing into dry clothes if they get wet. And agreed, it’s generally not the outdoors which gives us bugs it’s being indoors with other sick people, being outdoors appropriately dressed is probably less risky!

Completely normal. They’ll be outside as much as possible and as Tori said, colds are viral and won’t be caused from being outside. It’s most likely just the usual nursery bugs she has that’s unrelated to outside play.

Totally normal! Do you send her in with a puddle suit? Remember the cold doesn’t actually make you ill. It’s the germs! So she’ll be getting ill from other children. But being outside will help her immune system and is just sooo good for them. If we didn’t have them go out in all weathers then in the UK we’d be stuck inside even more with all the germs 😷

Thank you very much to everyone :) good to have reassurance 😊 and yes - she has a puddle suit but still gets soak wet through here and there... I appreciate the germs point and it's true (in Europe in the most countries kids stay out of nursery if ill - even with running nose only). I'm more concerned about a situation when little ones are not 100% healthy an they go outside into cold weather and get wet and freezing... Even if they change their clothes soon - not nice and helpful to be wet outside, freezing in cold weather when already not completely healthy... Even if few minutes only
