Breastfeeding toddler - how much solids

Hi, I'm BF my 14 month old and I've had comments from people that he isn't eating enough solids. We eat 3 meals and 1 to 2 snacks per day. Having said that the amount he eats can be quite varied. Sometimes a lot, sometimes not. He's 85th centile so no weight issues. But doesn't sleep through the night and BF minimum 1 to 3 times per night which makes me wonder if he isn't getting enough calories in the day. How much are babies eating at this age? Thank you x

I’d say he’s getting plenty! He wouldn’t be on the 85th centile if he wasn’t taking in enough calories. BFing in the night is more than likely comfort rather than hunger and is completely normal

Sounds like my 2 year old except she eats much less! She’s a huge snacker but breastfeeds avg 8-10x a day. Why would other people be concerned about his food intake especially if he’s 85th centile and 3+ meals a day? Sounds like he’s eating perfectly fine!

@Katie thank you so much. This is comforting to know. He's quite a chunk haha so I did think he was eating enough. Night wakings ..I guess every baby is different. They all eventually sleep through at some point 🫠

@Lauryne thank you so much for your kind words and support. Really appreciate it. Often mums who don't BF have slightly different opinions which is totally ok. Was very helpful to post on this group and get feedback 😀

@Vivien I think it’s common for people to compare it to formula or cows milk which you can definitely overfeed on and babies will eat less solids if they have a lot, but breastmilk adapts continuously to your littles needs so if they’re getting plenty from food the milk will be less fatty etc xx

my 14 month old is the same! same exact amount of solids and ebf also through the night. he still nurses every 2-3 hours during the day. don’t listen to anyone else, you know your baby best and if it feels right then don’t worry!

A dietician once told me to look at what they eat across a week rather than a day, as babies and toddlers' appetites vary so much but they're generally very good at assessing their hunger. My son is 2 and he stills breastfeeds and averages 1-2 wake ups at night. He's also 98th percentile 😂

@Vivien I BF my second until around 16m old - he didn’t sleep through the night until we stopped. He was definitely eating more than enough regardless of milk intake and has been nicknamed “the machine” because the boy can eat. He’s a happy, healthy, chonky almost 2yo.
