About Racism movies...
Hey there,
I know that media coverage and people outrage was died down after a few weeks but remember that things are not changing the way they should be and we’re still very much in this fight against racism in the U.S..
Anyways.. I wanted to offer a perspective. Now more often, non PoC are asking the questions what can I do? How do I educate myself? What movies can help me understand?...
A few weeks ago some people were offering the advice of watching certain movies about racism like “the help” on Netflix.
While I don’t mean to criticize people’s effort to get more involved in understanding what black and other PoC go and have gone through regarding racism, especially in America, it is important that we all keep in mind that when it comes to books, movies, documentaries etc. the racism “problem vs. solution” narrative portrayed might be very different and in many cases problematic depending on wether the story is told by a Black person or by a white person (often depicting the “White Savior Complex”).
I just ran into this video on IG that explains quite well what I meant to put into words when more of these conversations were taking place a few weeks ago.
Watch it, especially if you are non-black.
