If I’m honest I did think Omeprazole was the safest medication for reflux/heartburn during pregnancy. I’m sure your baby will be fine but I would give your GP a call this morning and check with them and they can always switch it over to Omeprazole! X
@Holly this is what I thought and what the internet seems to say as well! I’ve rang GO and having to ring back this afternoon. Hopefully everything will be ok 😭 xx
If you look on BNF, Lansoprazole is to be avoided in pregnancy, whereas Omeprazole is not known to be harmful. So if you can, switch to Omeprazole and throw away the Lansoprazole. If anything I’d honestly file a complaint cause they’ve given you a medication which is not safe in pregnancy, and they use BNF to check that. Baby should be fine though, so don’t panic. They’re more resilient than we know.
@Diana I really hope so 😭 I’d never forgive myself (or them!!) if something happened to her that could have been easily avoided! Waiting to phone the GP back this afternoon so hopefully they can advise and maybe even switch to omeprazole x
@Amanda You’ve done nothing wrong so don’t blame yourself for anything. I was in the same situation as you at the start. Had hyperemesis and was vomiting blood. My GP didn’t even give me Omeprazole. She just said the tiny blood vessels are bursting from stomach acid. I started eating a lot of bananas and yogurt to help my stomach a bit, and was fine after. I’ve now got bad acid reflux, but going through with it. I have extreme guilt if I take something, so I’ve not had any meds, apart from mandatory vitamins. It’s hard what we have to go through, but we’re almost there. Drs sometimes give meds that are not that recommended if risk outweighs benefit. But in this case there was a safe option. Try and change up your diet a bit, ask GP for what should you should eat more of and what should you cut out. And hopefully you start feeling better soon.
I can't comment about safety of the two drugs you've listed, but from personal experience it might be worth chatting with a doctor about other classes of drugs that treat reflux. I have GERD (since before pregnancy) and cannot tolerate any PPIs (omeprazole and lansoprazole both make me vomit) but I have been very successfully treated with famatodine, which has no identified increased risks during pregnancy.
Definitely try not to panic too much ☺️ My midwife said to me the other day that the reason they mark a lot of things as not safe on labels etc is purely just down to the manufacturer being super cautious as there's less info on pregnant people since we're a smaller group than the general public. Your doctor wouldn't give you something seriously harmful or completely untested on pregnant people ☺️ My GP warned about an anti-nausea medicine I've had since August the other day and after panicking to my midwife it turns out it's only known to cause side effects if taken in excessive quantities every single day which is obviously not what I've been doing 😅 I know omeprazole is safe (I've had both over the years due to health issues!) and I've been taking omeprazole for a good 3 months now and baby is absolutely fine so switching to that might make you feel a lot better ☺️ it's honestly been a god send for a lot of ladies on here (my reflux has been the worst of my life!) so fingers crossed you feel better soon!
Hey I was vomiting and spitting up blood and clots for 5 days. Absolutely terrified and kept going back to a&e. It turns out it was too much aspirin and I actually got told to increase my omprezole and stop the aspirin and luckily thank god its stopped! I'm consultant lead and straight away she sorted it despite multiple a&e trips!
Lansoprazole is fine in pregnancy . Lots of doctors prescribe it and use it in practice. BNF is not the be all and end all of all information (case in point is drug use in poor renal function which is way off what is actually done in practice!). Having said that if it will make you feel better, get GP to prescribe you Omeprazole. And please don't take advice from random people on the internet who clearly have no clue what they are talking about. If ever in doubt, speak to a pharmacist/doctor/midwife.
I’ve just been given this by my doctor because I was up all night with Gwaning pain in my stomach and vomiting! I hope it’s ok.. on the other end, does it work? x
Everything that ends with -zole- are not safe during pregnancy. I am not sure why GPs in the UK still prescribe things like this…. I also google every single thing/cream/antibiotic after visiting my midwife or GP as sorry no trust anymore or call my GP abroad for a quick consultation. I would just recommend to call back your GP and double check, or call maternity unit and ask them on a phone what they think about this medication.
