Infant Dyschezia or Grunting Baby Syndrome

My baby girl is now a month old and we are at that stage where she goes from having several effortless poopy diapers a day to straining and crying only to pass a soft bowel movement. It’s upsetting to watch her struggle, but apparently this is normal and babies need to learn how to relax on their pelvic floor and the stomach muscles will strengthen. I hope I’m not the only one! 🥲

We had it and it will pass! Have a lot of nights behind me where I had to put my little girl in a carrier and walk around in the neighbourhood with a crying baby.🫣 She’s almost 6 months now, it’s all gone! You have the good weather on your hands, if your LG cannot settle because of it, 30 minutes in a sling or carrier does wonder.😊

same here mama!! my girl is 3.5 weeks. it’s hard to watch for sure 😭 she gets so frustrated and starts screaming and straining so hard. all i can do is just rub her belly and do bicycles to try to help her out. i feel so bad because it’s usually when she’s sleeping too 🥲 hopefully they grow out of it soon!

We are currently going through this as well! Our son is also a month old and this has been going on a week now. He passed gas no problem but will be so uncomfortable and just have one giant blowout. He will just grunt in his bassinet at night lol. We discussed it with the pediatrician and it’s completely normal like you said but so hard to watch them struggle like that! We use gripe water to help which does a bit. Thankfully, he’s eating normally and will nap/sleep; just takes a bit to get settled. Luckily once he poops, he’s happy as a clam so I know this is the one thing preventing us from getting a solid few hours of sleep lol!

My baby was the same, it's apparently normal because they don't know how to pass wind or poop yet. Mines started to do it again st 5 months haha and I'm hoping it's the same thing because she's just started solids

I read that they cry for the same reason, they aren't actually upset they just do it to build pressure to get it all out

@Christin My mum and I went for our routine park walk today which baby girl would usually doze off but this time it happened while we were out and the walk home wasn’t pleasant! I’m glad to know that it will resolve within time. I’ll definitely give a sling a shot and hope for the best. Thank you x

@Amanda Reade We got it recommended by our health visitor and then the lady from our sling library explained to us why carrying helps. The M shape relaxes the pelvic floor and gravity makes everything move downwards. It can work that well, that she sometimes still likes to have a poo in the carrier or after carrying her for a while.😆

@Kyrah I tried the bicycle technique but she gets really uncomfortable so I stopped. It’s also happening when she’s sleeping and it’s so disturbing when she’s not napping nor sleeping properly! 😭

@Jessica Yes to the giant blowout! We have introduced gripe water to help too and it does ease her a little bit, but the struggle is definitely real!

@Amanda Reade Totally get it! I’ve been refraining from doing any techniques that involve putting something up his butt to stimulate a BM because I’ve read it can delay them learning how to go on their own but it’s tough. Glad I’m not the only one dealing with it!

@Jodie Oh no, at 5 months again?! I hope your baby is okay and know how control the pressure. It’s just helpless when we can’t do much hey?

@Jessica For sure! We didn’t want to go down that route too and just let it happen naturally. All the best to our babies - they’ll overcome this themselves and we’ll be able to get some sleep again 😂🙏🏻
