Hurt at daycare

Has anyone’s kid ever been hurt at daycare (bruise, scratch) and they didn’t know where it came from? I completely understand that toddlers get hurt but i feel like they should know how they got hurt. It’s happened twice and I’m a ftm and didn’t know if this is a normal thing at daycares or it’s time to switch. Thanks in advance for advice!

As a lead educator in a child care setting this 100% does happen. Yes, we endeavour to watch everything each child does. But let me ask you a question…. Does your child ever get a scratch? A bruise? Or anything while okaying at home and you can’t 100% say how it happened? If yes, then you’ll understand our perspective. Supervising children is our responsibility yes, but small incidents do occur while children are playing together that we can’t definitively explain. I would rather be honest to my parents and say “this scratch occurred however we are unsure exactly how he/she managed it” than to lie to my parents. If it is significant injuries then yes we should 100% be able to say in detail how it occurred. A scratch not do much. That’s not me down playing it. It’s simply the truth.

@Ange thank you for your advice/feedback. I understand completely. I guess I’m worried because it wasn’t just a little scratch. It was a decent sized bruise with little scratches around it and a little down the arm. I find it hard to believe he didn’t cry or anything and they didn’t notice it or tell us anything. We saw at pick up and had to ask what happened. Where they said they didn’t know and didn’t notice it. Little scratches and bruises I totally understand. He’s a toddler! Lol

Oof, an injury like that would have me worried, especially since it was never brought up (also ftm tho, so grain of salt). How large was the bruise? What is the teacher to student ratio?

My kids get bumps and bruises all the time either at home or daycare. Half the time I don’t know what happened even when they’re at home, so I’m not surprised daycare might not either. Sometimes it does happen that daycare will be like there’s this but idk what happened. If it isn’t a severe injury, I wouldn’t worry too much.

@Leila I would say a little smaller than a gold ball honestly. @Emily yeah and like I said, I know kids get her. But they didn’t even notice it which was crazy to me. And warn me at pick up. Idk it scared me a little.

Well considering my child gets scratches and bruised in our own home and we don't know how it happened, I wouldn't be too mad if our daycare couldn't tell us specifics. As long as they can explain all of the bigger owies, I'm comfortable (like a goose egg on his head or he got knocked over by a big kid, etc). But these are my preferences. I have a degree in child development and am a teacher so I work with kids daily and know they get hurt. Bruised up legs are so normal for kids, especially active ones.

I would take pictures and keep track of any and all bruises and scratches, that way if it keeps happening, you have record of it. You can never be too careful and I think you had every right to ask and question it esp when we see scary videos online of things happening within daycare settings.

Honestly as much as you try you can’t see everything and for some reason kids love getting hurt or doing things to hurt others when someone else gets hurt. There were so many times I’d be trying to get someone’s busted lip to stop bleeding and a kid walked over with a bite mark. I also had parents ask where a scratch come from even though they came in with it that morning. Whether you’re 1:6 1:1 or 4:1 things happen and you don’t always see it right then. Last night my daughter was playing with us and her grandparents with a wrapping paper tube for a good 15 minutes. It wasn’t until my husband grabbed it and got stabbed with a staple that we even realised it was there. She had been bleeding while we were colouring with chalk the only reason we knew she was cut was the blood all over the chalk she refused to let go of. Moral of the story no matter how many people are actively watching a child injuries happen and they don’t always cry when they’ve sliced their hand open 🙃

I agree with everyone! Things happen and sometimes you don’t see. It’s surprising how often kids don’t cry when hurt! However, I would definitely make them document it as an observation. That way if anything were to happen in the future or keep happening, there is a documented incident
