URGENT - Anyone with an Owlet, please read!!

Tonight I was sitting on the sofa and started getting loads of notifications from my Owlet sock, which was on-charge upstairs saying it couldn't get a reading, low battery etc., so I went to check and to my absolute HORROR this is what I found. My daughter would have been wearing this within the next two hours. I am utterly horrified.

Oh wow. That’s so scary. We have one and hate how it keeps going off line. We were going to take it back.

Oh shit that’s scary ! I also have one this makes me wanna stop using it 😩

I've contacted them immediately! I'm devestated because it's the reason I sleep 😭😭 x

@Sadie Yes, she sleeps next to me in her Next2Me crib still! I keep telling myself these things haven't existed for long and lots of people don't use them anyway so she will be fine but it just gives me such peace of mind that it will alert me if anything happens to her breathing 🥺 I never normally feel the need to check her during the night but I definitely will now! X

@Sian oh wow 😳 im sure your baby will be fine! We returned ours after hearing the horror stories. My daughter hasn’t had one since, your instincts will kick in if anything where to happen! Which I’m sure it won’t! Keep calm x

@leanne I haven’t heard any horror stories? We never ended up using the sock, but I use the camera. What are the horror stories please do tell

@Adriana horror stories maybe too strong but… Burning babies feet, can falsely display, emits radiation. The machine will alarm if oxygen drops below 80 which is incredibly low!! Below 90 is very dangerous let alone 80 And it actually doesn’t Prevent or reduce the risk of sids BUT if you read anything you can find negatives so if having your baby wear the owlet sock makes you sleep better then use it

Sue them

I’m so glad your little one wasn’t wearing it when it decided to go rogue! This is horrifying! I’m so sorry momma. Hugs

What @Angeline said!

What is this even for?

It tracks the babies heart rate & oxygen level .. it’s more for a moms peace of mind to check the app to see how her baby is doing & it notifies you if there heart level/oxygen drops a certain amount! @Aura

@Natalie Luna oh...

These monitors aren’t worth it. We just used the standard sound only baby monitor by the crib that isn’t online but runs on radio signal & it never went out, or “offline” or leaked, or got hacked or anything bad. I heard every sound so well & it even had a signal for up to 4 blocks away from my house. I am glad I didn’t do the owlet or anything like it. There is zero evidence these even work at lowering risks of sids etc… they aren’t even medical grade & are discouraged by the FDA

We bought one off Amazon and it malfunctioned from Day 1. Needless to say, we returned it immediately and got store credit.

@Marie the thing with SIDS though is that there is no noise to hear on a standard monitor. It's silent. So I do think monitors like these have a place (but obviously not when they explode like this one!)

So scary this happened! I'm glad your baby wasn't wearing it at the time, it doesn't bear thinking about! We were considering getting one but this has definitely put me off. I've been recommended the Snuza Hero too so that could be worth you looking at if you want an alternative? Let us know what the company says on the Owlet. Just awful this happened.

Is that an owlet charger? It looks different from the one I have

@Rebecca but these monitors have no evidence at all of preventing sids and aren’t FDA approved nor hospital grade. Parents can get medical grade monitors for that from their doctors. These aren’t it.

@Marie I’ve seen someone compare it with their babies real heart monitor and the results we’re pretty much the exact same

@Makayla so far the only one that just got FDA approval is the dream sock so I wouldn’t take my chances with any other ones

@Marie I know they can't prevent it, but if a monitor alerts you immediately your baby has stopped breathing you can at least intervene immediately and potentially save them. Without a monitor such as this you may not realise they've stopped breathing until it's too late. I'm in the UK (as is OP) so I'm not familiar with the FDA guidance. I don't believe doctors here issue medical grade monitors. I've never heard of that happen, but doesn't mean to say it doesn't. I understand these are not medical grade monitors but I do think monitors such as this serve a purpose in terms of alerting you to a potential problem quickly.

Horrifying! Wondering what the manufacture had to say for themselves? @Sian

Hello! Little update; Owlet have had lots of communication about this - they actually rang me the same night. They've sent a full replacement (obviously a hard decision now) and refunded me and they've sent me a label to send mine back to the US where they're going to send it to QC and get it checked for what's happened - I've asked for an update when this is done. Difficult situation- would you use it again? I love the product so much but now I'm worried.. x

@Sian it’s great that they replaced it and you got a refund…but I honestly wouldn’t risk it 🥲
