Infant gaviscon

My boy has been prescribed infant gaviscon for his reflux and I’m baffled, he currently takes 4oz bottles as recommended by the hospital doctor due to thinking that he may have been having slightly too much formula per feed (he was on 5oz), now the gp from our practice has prescribed it and on the sticker it says to mix 2 sachets with no less than 230ml (8oz), he’s over 10lb so should be having 2 sachets but I can’t help but feel like 8oz is such a massive jump from what he’s on. Any advice from mamas who have used infant gaviscon is greatly appreciated!

We used gaviscon for a couple of days but stooped as wasn’t agreeing with her but we got told to use only one sachet as she was under 10Ibs and to just make the bottle up as normal. May be worth calling up your GP or pharmacy for clarification incase there’s a reason they’ve advised this. However if he only drinks 4oz it’s very unlikely he will be able to drink the 230ml so seems strange to me as he won’t be getting the full dose of the medication!

Hey ours has gaviscon hes also over 10 lbs. We give him one sachet per 180mls as its all he needs but sometimes did it with less milk a few weeks ago. Our sticker says nothing about the 230mls. Our pharmacist just said 1 or 2 sachets per feed no specification on amount. I think breast fed babies have It as a paste so I can't see how the amount of milk really makes a difference as long as its not too thick that it can't go through the teat. I would ring the doctors and ask then to specify as there may be a particular reason 🙂

I used the infant Gaviscon however I used a smaller amount due to it causing constipation xx

Thank you! I’m going to speak to the pharmacist about it because speaking to a GP is beyond difficult. I just don’t understand why it’s said for him to have 8oz when the maximum he’s ever had is 5oz x

I was very puzzled by this description initially too. But what they are basically saying is that one sachet should be dissolved in no less than 115ml. I think they are making an assumption that a larger baby will be taking more than that per feed which would dilute medicine too much. Hence they suggest 2 sachet per feed instead of 1 (115ml x2=230ml). I found a useful calculation helping to see how much to give to a baby if they take less then min amount, so it is basically proportional to the volume. So you can have a look, but if he is taking around 115ml anyway I’m not really sure if he would need it. Have a look anyway in case useful and I would be interested to hear what your pharmacist says as well .

The GP prescribed 1 sachet per 5oz bottle for us however My health visitor said to give a low dose so we started only giving half a sachet in 5oz bottles as we didn’t want her to get constipated and that seemed to keep most of the sick down. A month or so on now and it’s gotten a little worse so we have upped it to 3/4s of a sachet in each 5oz bottle

We used 1 sachet for 5 oz didn't give it to him for every feed mainly day times ones when his reflux had been worse. Found it gave him terrible constipation to the point where he was in complete agony so we stopped using it I feel its too harsh for them.
