Signs of autism is toddlers….

So my 17 month old is doing a lot of head shaking and rocking in his highchair. He’s recently starting to become a really picky eater too, I feel like he’s living off toast and fruit and snacks for his meals and he used to eat pretty much anything. Am worried he’s not getting enough nutrition or calories in his diet, however when we last got him weighed he’s 26lbs and on the 90th percentile. Any advice would be great.

This is all completely normal for his age, but if you’re still worried please don’t hesitate to bring it up to his paediatrician.

@Erin thank you ☺️ how long do I give it before taking him to the doctors with him not eating very much?

@Nicola so my niece was like that—didn’t really start eating solids as meals (she was a snacker) until 2. i’d say asking now is still a good idea.

He used to eat all his meals and have 2 snacks and now he’s just having 1 snack and not much of his meals, he’s throwing a lot of his food too.

I would suggest mentioning it now even if it is something of nothing. Just it will help speed the process up should you need referrals x

Mom of 3 autistic boys, all children are autistic until about age 2. At age 2 is when they should be growing out of doing things such as rocking, shaking head/hands, ect. All these things he is doing are considered normal for his age. He’s a picky eater because he’s starting to learn autonomy and there are things he likes and dislikes. He rocks and shakes his head because that’s how he knows how to express excitement or dislike because he hasn’t learned better self soothing actions yet. Like I said all babies are “autistic “ until 2 because at around 2 they should stop doing things and learn better coping skills, it’s the failing to do so that send the flag for potential autism.

@Amanda oh I see that’s so interesting to know! Thank you ☺️
