First food

Please someone tell me I’ve not done anything wrong hahah So I’ve tried my first solid meal with my six month old, it was carrot puree and I’ve steamed carrots yesterday but just didn’t have time to feed her then. We tried couple of spoons today but she vomited after every spoon, is this normal? Or have I don’t something wrong like using wrong technique when trying to feed her? Where do I go from here, do I keep trying again later on today or tomorrow? I’m just so confused and feel like I’ve don’t something wrong 😔

They're probably just gagging a little because it's a new sensation. My LG was doing the same. If they're actually swallowing the food and then bringing it back it could be reflux? Try not to stress. It doesn't sound like you've done anything wrong to me. I'd try again tomorrow x

Did she actually vomit after swallowing it or just pushing it out her mouth with her tongue? If she hasn’t lost her tongue thrust reflex yet then this will happen and it means she isn’t quite ready to be weaned just yet (6months is just a rough guide as to when they will be ready) as she will automatically push the food out of her mouth rather than swallow it. To check this you can put your finger on her bottom lip and if she starts pushing her tongue into it then the reflex is still there, if she attempts to bite or suck your finger instead then the reflex has gone 😊 if it has gone then she may have just been gagging and spitting it back out, as it takes practise for them to learn how to eat, if it doesn’t get any better after a few attempts then maybe reach out to your HV xXx

It's so new and different for them, I read it can take up to 10 tries of one vegetable for them to get used to it. Also they will only have a very small amount so a few spoonfuls is likely to be enough. Like others have said if she's just pushing it out with her tongue that's very normal, but if she's actually vomiting large amounts after may be worth chatting to health visitor to get their advice x

It’s a new thing for them so it’s normal! But maybe try with something more easy on taste? Like rice porridge or oatmeal porridge. Started it yesterday with rice porridge and my daughter loved it. Also, we practiced the spoon before with formula milk :)

@Freya I don’t think she really swallowed anything tbh

@Rochelle she was more pushing it out, I’ve tried the finger tip and she is sucking and biting it, so I guess we will keep practicing 😉

@Bethany she vomited bit of milk, I fed her 40 min with breast milk before trying the carrot puree but not sure if I’ve done it incorrectly and should have waited longer ?

@Yujin thank you, maybe I need to try the spoon practice too, how do I do it though ?

@Nikolet my baby is on formula milk so I made small amount of formula milk in the bottle and spoon fed her. She wasn’t sure at the start but after 2-3 try she knew it was just milk so she started to suck and bite the spoon. I did that practice twice before actual food yesterday :)

We tried carrot puree yesterday and after every spoon was a funny face and then a shiver to the point he wouldn’t want any more, I think babies don’t like carrots 🤣🤣🤣x

@Tereza seems like it hahah

My baby has reflux so it has been a struggle for us, if it’s too thin he brings it all back up, either watery or with milk. I have started on porridge and mixing different fruit and veggies with something, or if doing a puree it has to be thicker so it can’t go back up 🫠 I have to work with consistency so it has to be porridge like consistency and not too watery, we tried sweet potato and even if he brought it up he didn’t have any other reaction so we have been doing stuff like carrot with sweet potato, broccoli with sweet potato etc

@Nikolet I feed mine every 4 hours so I try and do food in the middle, meaning 2hours or an hour and a half after milk but he is formula fed

@Gabriele this makes sense, I’ve tried doing the same the other day and she wasn’t vomiting so definitely need but long after she was with breast milk, thank you ☺️
