Lemsip

Hi everyone I have a bad cold at the moment and I was wondering if I can take lemsip. I found online that it should be avoided in first trimester but would it be safe now? Has anyone been told something about this by a doctor or midwife? I am 29 weeks

Think paracetamol is ok to take if you have pain, not sure about the other ingredients

I accidentally had 1 before I knew we shouldn't. I was about 4 months at the time, when I called triage, they told me I'm fine, and sure enough, everything was fine, but they did say I should stop, just in case. Hot water, honey and lemon is the generally recommended thing I'm afraid.

I asked my doctor about this while in my first pregnancy last year, basically they are ok to take its just paracetamol but most of them contain caffeine too which is meant to be limited in pregnancy so if you took 4 lemsips a day as per the guidance on the pack then your over your caffeine allowance for the day hence not recommended. But as Emma has said above hot water, honey and fresh lemon and take paracedamol and its basically the same minus the caffeine. Even sometimes i find just hot diluting juice/cordial eases things a bit. Hope you start to feel better soon x

I’ve just recovered from a cold and although I was very tempted to take Lemsip, the general advice is you shouldn’t during pregnancy as much of the ingredients can be harmful,or not enough is known to rule out any potential risks. It’s like anything I’m sure you’ll be fine should you of already taken one but better to stay on the side of caution. I drank a lot of hot water and honey, squeezed lemon for my sore throat and took paracetamol when I really couldn’t manage in the evening. I also ate loads of oranges for vitamin c and to shorten the length of my cold. I found my cold didn’t last long and the more natural remedies really worked. Wishing you a speedy recovery it sucks being pregnant with a cold.

I think on lemsip there is a particular ingredient that can induce labour. Safer to just make a hot lemon and honey and take a paracetamol x

It’s the decongestant in lemsip which should be avoided. Same with Sudafed etc as it can supposedly restrict blood flow to the baby. I accidentally had a lemsip when breastfeeding my little boy and I did notice a drop in supply, so would definitely avoid in pregnancy too x

@Keeley The same happened to me! I was crying when I'd taken two of them and noticed a dip in supply. It recovered super quickly, but was quite traumatising! I too would 100% avoid lemsip while pregnant. x

Pharamasists have told me not to have it. I know they're not doctors but they do have similar info in regards to medications so I just avoided it

I have pneumonia at the moment and I took paracetamol and Decaf Green Tea with lemon , ginger and honey 🩷 I’m currently on antibiotics now . And I recommend getting the wee ginger shots . They have them in every shop in the Juice Aisle

We always boil lemonade and take paracetamols and it does the same thing as lemsips x
