Halloween is too scary for little kids. I on purpose avoid streets with really big and scary decorations. Really… what’s the point?
Children that age don’t typically understand the concept of real vs imaginary and pretend that sense develops around 6-7. So think that your child is literally thinking that ghosts goblins and skeletons are all real living creatures. I’d try and explain that they are not real and that they are pretend and dressing up maybe show them how dressing up can change a person’s appearance, or let them practice dressing up in a costume. Read a story about this a good one is Herbert’s 1st Halloween.
You could even try putting on a costume yourself and rolemodeling with your child, such as a wig and show them in a mirror that like you can take the wig off and still be you eventually if they want let them try. It’s completely normal for them to be afraid though don’t stress!
We introduced Halloween through “Super Simple Songs Halloween” on YouTube. The songs are catchy and fun so my 2 yr old really enjoys Halloween stuff now. We tell her when we see ghosts that are cute and, wow! Look at that spider! Cool! We’re now watching her favourite characters Halloween editions (today we watched Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Sesame street ones) Not sure where you’re located but we go to Canadas Wonderland where there’s 4 stations to trick or treat, so she’s getting used to the idea of having the bag and saying ‘trick or treat’ and getting something from someone in the bag (we have seasons passes so have done it a few times). You could do dry a dry run with your family to get them excited to do to the door and trick or treat. Go to a farm and have fun in the pumpkins, taking pics and spending time around them. Keep associating them with Halloween. Hope it gets better for you!
Thanks for the input everyone! I will definitely be trying some of your suggestions 🙂
